Charles Richard Savage was born on 7th March 1878 at Westminster in the inner western suburbs of London. He was the son of Mary Ann Savage, formerly Snelling, and her husband Walter William Savage, a last maker. Charles Richard was known by the diminutive form of his middle name, as Dick. The family lived on Carnaby Street, with Dick's baptism record giving their address as 27 Carnaby Street, and the 1881 census a couple of years later finding the family living at 10 Carnaby Street.

Dick's father died in 1883, when Dick was only five years old. The family then moved to Islington in the northern suburbs of London. The 1891 census finds Dick living with his mother and siblings at 31 Rupert Road in Islington. His mother was working as a laundress, whilst thirteen year old Dick was working as an errand boy. By 1901 they had moved to 18 Landseer Road in Islington and Dick was working as a packer for a grocer.

In 1903, aged 25, Dick married Mary Elizabeth Treby (who was known as Lizzie) in Islington. She was originally from Torquay in Devon, but had moved to London to work as a domestic servant. They had a daughter called Laura Maud later that year, but sadly she died when only a few months old. They had another daughter in 1906, called Phyllis Louisa Mary.

The 1911 census finds Dick and Lizzie living with their daughter at 66 Chalk Farm Road in the St Pancras area of London. They shared the house with Dick's brother and his family. Dick was working as a packer for a grocery.

By 1916 Dick and Lizzie had left London and moved to Dartford in Kent. Several of Dick's siblings and his mother had moved there from London a few years earlier - the 1911 census found his brother Walter, sister Lily and his mother living at two different addresses on Fulwich Road in Dartford. Dick's mother died in Dartford early in 1916.

After about a ten year gap since their previous daughter's birth, Lizzie and Dick had another daughter in Dartford later in 1916, called Dorothy Joan. It seems Lizzie's father also followed them to Dartford, presumably to live with or near Lizzie. He died in Dartford later in 1916.

Dick and Lizzie went on to have one more daughter in Dartford in 1922, called Betty Corinne.

At the outbreak of the Second World War the family was still living at 36 Fulwich Road in Dartford. Dick was described as a manager of a grocery and provision store. Their daughter Phyllis was living with them with her husband and young daughter.

Dick died on 20th February 1957, aged 78. His last home was recorded as being 36 Fulwich Road in Dartford, but he died at Addlestone in the parish of Chertsey in Surrey, at the home of their daughter Dorothy and her husband. He was buried at Addlestone Cemetery. Lizzie survived him by nearly four years, in which time she went to live with her daughter Dorothy's family. They moved away from Addlestone to East Horsley, but when Lizzie died in 1961 she was buried back at Addlestone alongside Dick.
