George William Savage was born on 14th September 1883 at Westminster in the inner western suburbs of London. He was the son of Mary Ann Savage, formerly Snelling, and her husband Walter William Savage, a last maker. George never met his father, who had died three months before George was born. The family lived at 20 Portland Street in the Soho area. Sometime after George's birth the family moved out to Islington in the northern suburbs of London, where the 1891 census finds the family living at 31 Rupert Road, with George's mother working as a laundress.

By 1901 the family had moved to 18 Landseer Road, and George was working as an engine labourer.

Sadly George died in 1904 when he was only twenty years old. He was buried at Islington Cemetery on 9th May 1904. His mother survived him.
