Harriet Abbott was born on 19th December 1872 at Tottenham in Middlesex, daughter of Emma Abbott, formerly Tozer, and her husband John Abbott, a carpenter. The 1881 census finds Harriet living with her parents and siblings at 3 Byron Terrace on Woodville Grove in Tottenham. By 1891 Harriet was working as a domestic servant to a licensed victualler's family at 41 Mercer Road in Islington in London.

On 9th September 1900, aged 27, Harriet married Walter Childs at St John's Church in the Upper Holloway area of Islington. The 1901 census finds Harriet and Walter living in one room at 19 Albion Street in Islington, with Walter working as a builder's labourer.

Harriet and Walter went on to have three daughters between 1901 and 1909, all born in Islington. The 1911 census finds the family living in two rooms at 25 Cornwallis Road in Islington, with Walter described as a general labourer.

Walter died in 1932, aged 56.

In 1934, just under two years after Walter's death, Harriet remarried. Her second husband was Alfred James Savage, whose first wife had been Harriet's younger sister, Edith, who had also died in 1932. Harriet and Alfred married in Islington and then went to live at Enfield in Middlesex. At the outbreak of the Second World War Alfred and Harriet were living with her daughter Alice's family at 60 Pembroke Avenue in Enfield. (Co-incidentally, Alice Childs had married a man called Ernest Childs.)

Harriet died in 1948, aged 75. She died in the Edmonton district, which covered Enfield. She was buried at Highgate Cemetery in London on 27th February 1948. Alfred survived her by about fourteen years.
