Alfred Aldridge was born in 1841 at Graveley in Hertfordshire. He was the son of Elizabeth Aldridge, formerly London, and her husband Thomas Aldridge, an agricultural labourer. The 1851 census finds Alfred living with his parents and siblings in Graveley. Census night on 1861 found Alfred living with his paternal grandparents in Graveley and working as a plough boy. His parents were living elsewhere in the village.
On 21st February 1863, aged 21, Alfred married Betsy Moles at Willian, a couple of miles north of Graveley, which is where she was from. They returned to Graveley after their marriage, having nine children there between 1863 and 1886, although their first child died when he was a small baby.
Each census from 1871 to 1901 finds the family living in Graveley, with Alfred working as an agricultural labourer. In 1901 their address was given as North Road, the main road through the village, which was part of the main road from London to Edinburgh.
Alfred died in 1906, aged 64. Betsy survived him by about fourteen years.

ch. 5 Jun 1842, Graveley, Hertfordshire: Alfred son of James & Elizabeth Aldridge
Needs to be confirmed at Hertfordshire Archives. It is presumed the 'James' for his father's name is either a transcription error or a mistake on the original. All other records show his father's name was Thomas. Alfred's birth record gives his mother's maiden name as London, and a Thomas Aldridge and Elizabeth London had married in Graveley in 1839. The 1851 census and Alfred's marriage also give his father's name as Thomas.
