Alexander Dugger was born ca 1752 or earlier, probably in Surry Co, VA, or possibly in Brunswick Co, VA. This birth date is based on his first public record in 1773, assuming he was at least 21 then. Various researchers have listed him born in 1750, though I don't know the source for that date.

It is quite possible that Alexander Dugger is a son of Lydia Dugger, though this is far from proven. Court records show that she had a child out of wedlock sometime just previous to May 1751 in Surry Co, VA. This child could easily be Alexander. He did name one of his daughters "Lydia", so that is a strong clue. Lydia's proven son John Dugger, Surry and Alexander Dugger seem to have a lot in common, and an analysis of various records seem to suggest (but not prove) they were brothers. DNA testing shows that they probably were brothers, or at least that their fathers were of the same family.

On 16 Jan 1773 Alexander Dugger and Howell Eldridge witnessed a Deed in Lunenburg Co, VA between John Lanthrop of Lunenburg Co, VA to Sterling Edmunds of Brunswick. (Lunenburg Co, VA Deed Book 12 page 322).

On 24 May 1773 several Dugger's were listed on the Tithable list for Saint Andrews Parish, Brunswick Co, VA. The list included Alexander Dugger, James Dugger, John Dugger and John Dugger Sr. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 11 page 138).

Sometime prior to 1774, Alexander Dugger married Ann --- in Brunswick Co, VA. I don't know what her maiden name might have been. There are quite a few records associating Alexander with the Proctor family, so that might be a possible maiden name for Ann.

In November 1777, in Brunswick Court, Alexander Dugger was appointed guardian of Mary and Charles Edwards, orphans of Charles Edwards, deceased. James Dugger (his cousin) and Henry Dugger (his Uncle) were security for him (bondsmen). (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 13 page 175).

On 22 Nov 1777 a Mr. Proctor sold property to Alexander Dugger in Brunswick Co, VA. I don't have the details of this deed. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 13 page 325).

On 14 Feb 1778 Alexander Dugger and John Dugger (Sr) (his uncle), Howell Dugger (his cousin) and Daniel Dugger (his cousin) all witnessed a deed between Flood Mitchell of Granville Co, NC to John Dugger (Jr) (Alex's cousin). (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 13 page 189).

On 20 Apr 1780 Alexander Dugger witnessed a deed between Proctor and Abernathy. (Brunswick Co, VA Deed Book 14 page 65)

Alexander Dugger was listed on the 1782 Personal Property Tax list in Brunswick Co, VA and taxed for 1 White (himself).

Alexander Dugger was listed on the 1782 Real Property Tax list and listed for 100 acres. This must be the land he purchased in 1777 from Mr. Proctor.

Alexander Dugger was listed on the 1783 Personal Property Tax list in Brunswick Co, VA and taxed for 1 White (himself).

He was not listed on the 1783 Real Property Tax List. He sold his property, but the deed was dated 1784.

In August 1783, in Brunswick Court, Thomas Clements, Executor of Benjamin Clements sued Alexander Dugger and Julius Perry. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 8 page 211)

On 23 Feb 1784 Alexander Dugger and Ann Dugger sold 100 acres to George Vaughan. (Brunswick Co, VA Will Book 2 page 262).

In February 1784, in Brunswick Court, the deed from Alexander Dugger and wife Ann to George Vaughan was ordered recorded. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 8 page 340).

Also in February 1784, in Brunswick Court, Mary and Charles Edwards, orphans of Charles Edwards, deceased, chose Alexander Dugger as their guardian. John Dugger Jr (his cousin) and George Vaughan were his securities. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 8 page 340).

Alexander Dugger was not listed on the 1784 personal or real property tax list in Brunswick Co, VA. Apparently he moved to Orange Co, NC in this year, but probably after February.

On 3 Mar 1786 Andrew and wife Margaret Patterson "of Orange Co, NC" sold 640 acres to Alexander Duggar also of Orange Co, NC. Witnesses were John Gattis and Alexander Gattis. (Orange Co, NC Deed Book 3 page 155).

On 6 Jan 1787, Less than a year after buying it, Alexander and Ann Duggar of Orange Co, NC sold their 640 acres to George Johnston. Witnesses were Charles Johnston and Andrew Patterson. (Orange Co, NC Deed Book 3 page 174).

They may have moved back to Brunswick Co, VA for a little while, but not necessarily so. Alexander was listed in a couple of court records there, but he didn't have to live there to be so named.

In March 1788, in Brunswick Court, Thomas Lundy, Administrator of Henry Morris, deceased, sued John Dugger and Alexander Dugger for debt. I'm not sure which John Dugger this was, but it could be his supposed brother John Dugger, Surry. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 15 page 1).

In May 1788, in Brunswick Court, Thomas Lundie, administrator of Henry Morris, deceased, sued Joshua Proctor and Alexander Dugger for debt. The suit "abates as to Dugger", which I suppose means that Alexander's part of the debt was paid, or forgiven, or something of that nature. (Brunswick Co, VA Order Book 15 page 15).

The two records in 1788 in Brunswick Co, VA do not mean that they had returned there, only had court business there. They were probably still residing in Orange County, NC, even though they owned no land at this time.

Alexander Dugger was probably listed on the 1790 census in Orange Co, NC, but unfortunately, this 1790 census for this county was lost. The reconstructed census shows Alexander Dugger listed there though. This was supposedly based on tax lists from the same timeframe.

On 19 Sep 1795 Alexander Duggar, Abr. Allen and Willoughby Self witnessed a deed between Samuel and Elizabeth Allen to George Johnston, all of Orange Co, NC. (Orange Co, NC Deed Book 5 page 488).

At this point (c1795) , my research on Alexander Dugger has slacked off considerably. Others have shared information on his family with me. My Tennessee research has (so far) been limited to census records, tax lists and marriage records, but I have not done any county level research, so there may be a great deal of source data waiting to be found regarding him and his family. Other researchers may already have this source data that I'm lacking.

Alexander Dugger and family left Orange Co, NC sometime between 1795 and ca 1800 moved to Greene Co, TN.

Alexander Dugger was probably listed on the 1800 census in Greene Co, TN, but unfortunately, the 1800 census was lost for most of Tennessee.

Alexander Dugger was listed on the 1805 Tax list in Greene Co, TN.

"Alexander Duger" was listed on the 1809 Sumner Co., TN tax list. It isn't certain whether it is this Alexander or perhaps his son of the same name.

Alexander Dugger was probably listed on the 1810 census in Greene Co, TN, but unfortunately, the 1810 census was lost for most of Tennessee.

Alexander Dugger was listed on the 1812 Tax list in Greene Co, TN and charged for 1 white (himself).

Between 1812 and 1820 Alexander Dugger moved half way across Tennessee to Maury Co, TN. He was listed there on the 1820 census. Some of his family remained in Greene Co, TN, while others went to Maury with him. On the 1820 census record, there were several younger children with them. These are most likely grandchildren, instead of children.

It appears that both Alexander and his wife Ann died in the 1820's in Maury Co, TN. I have no information on whether he left a Will, nor if their was an Estate record.
