Abel was the oldest of Calvin and Julia Fairchild Huntley's thirteen children. He was mustered into service on 29 August, 1862 at Indianapolis, Indiana. After he was discharged at St. Louis, Missouri on 30 March, 1863, he enlisted in Co. I, 1st Missouri Regiment at St. Louis, Missouri.

Abel died of disease during the Siege of Vicksburg at the young age of twenty-seven.

Abel's highest rank was as Sergeant. He was awarded the Civil War Medal.
