Discussion

Names of early settlers in Old Augusta, as recorded in Augusta County Records, were extracted from the Index of Chalkley's Chronicles, to create a database of given names and surnames in Old Augusta. Chalkley's Index includes about 95000 entries, and records the occurrence of about 850 distinct given names. Most of these given names occur only once, but some, such as "John" are recorded numerous times. The following table shows the relative frequency of the more commonly encountered given names.

NameCountSexPercent
These data represent about 80% of the total number of records encountered in Chalkley, yet they also accounts for just 48 (6%) of the 856 given names in these same records. This would seem to confirm the frequently encounted view that our ancestors were "not very creative when it came to naming their children, with only a very limited selection of names to choose from. Among men, John, William and James are clearly the most popular, while among girls mary, Elizabeth, and Margaret are most frequently mentioned. Wgihle this tabulation does not show it, woman's names are mentioned much less frequently than men's names. NOTE: This graphic includes ALL data for all given names, just not the ones that were most commonly used.
