Harry Rogers[1] conflated this family with the family of John Carpenter of Dilwyn, ancestor of Lord George Carpenter, first Baron of Tyrconnel, making this family's son William identical with William Carpenter of Dilwyn. This error probably arose in part because the son John of this family was a vicar in Dilwyn. However, the family was clearly of Kinnersley, based on the wills of Joan (Pike) Carpenter and 3 sons of her son William.

It is entirely possible that the Dilwyn and Kinnersley Carpenter families were related, and that the Dilwyn Carpenter's were in a position to bestow a benefice on a son of the Kinnersley family. The opposite may have also occurred, as a Thomas Carpenter was a vicar in Kinnersley a generation later, but cannot be easily placed in the Kinnersley family.
