Johann Georg Sommer married Anna Barbara Rub in 1745 in Freistett, Baden, Germany. They had several children in Germany, two of whom survived to emigrate with their parents to American, landing in Philadelphia on 22 Sep 1752 aboard the ship Brothers. At least two Georg's brothers emigrated at the same time: Johannes and Johann Martin. There is some thought that his sister Maria Catharina also emigrated.

George and Barbara Summers (Anglicized names) were found in church records in Philadelphia and Germantown in the years after their arrival. Then in 1775 was a deed in Sussex County, New Jersey where George Summers purchased 414 acres on Scotts Mountain from Thomas Potts. George was active in the St. James "Straw" Lutheran Church in Greenwhich, NJ which has record of his death there in 1785.
