This page is an attempt to map out all of the Chatt families in Northumberland, based on comprehensive record searches. The first step is using available online indexes (e.g., familysearch.org, ancestry.com), in order to identify likely families by matching up sequences of christenings that likely belong together, and likely matches for marriage and burial records. Further searches in actual records (e.g., reviewing FHL films of parish registers) to glean details not available in the indexes, e.g., abodes, help clarify cases that may be ambiguous.

Chatt in Corbridge (1663-1670)

Only one family turns up in familysearch.com indexes in Corbridge:

  • John
      • c.1663 Mary, dau of John
      • c.1666 Thomas, son of John
      • c.1669 Cuthbert, son of John
      • c.1670 Elizabeth, dau of John (Cuthbert is christened in Dec 1669, and Elizabeth in Jan 1670, but note that in the old-style calendar, Jan 1670 is 13 months after Dec 1669.)

Chatt in St. John Lee (1671-1781)

Only a handful of records, mostly in one family, are indexed for St. John Lee in Acomb (which familysearch.org calls "Lee Saint John").

  • Thomoe [sic in index]
    • m.1671 Thomas Chatt and Alice Smith (two months after first child?)
      • c.1671 Thomas, son of Thomoe
      • c.1674 Gulielmus, son of Thomoe

      • c.1681 Anna, dau of Thomoe
      • c.1686 Margareta, dau of Thomoe
  • m.1694 Thomas Chatt and Elizabeth Wright (Possible match for Thomas c.1671 above. One index has surname as "Waight" while another has "Wright". There are no other "Waight" records in index, but plenty of "Wright".)
  • m.1781 Mary Chatt and John Scott

Chatt in Hexham parish (1698-1759)

The following Chatt families are constructed from the Church of England parish records of Hexham. Note that all the Chatt christenings in the Hexham parish registers are associated with places in the Whitley chapelry. There appear to be no Chatts in Hexham records from 1764 when Whitley Chapel started keeping its own register.

  • Thomas in Dotland
    • No marriage records in Hexham for Thomas Chatt in 1670-1698. There is a 1694 marriage for a Thomas Chatt and Elizabeth Wright in St. John Lee (Acomb, across the river from Hexham). No other Thomas Chatts christening children in Northumberland in 1694-1714.
      • Mary (1698/Dotland - ?)
      • Sarah (1701/Dotland - ?)
  • John in MireHouse (originally of Dotland, 1.5 miles north)

      • Mary (1698/? - ?)
      • Jane (1700/MyarHouse - ?)
      • Hannah (1702/MyarHouse - ?)
      • Ann (1705/MyarHouse - ?)
      • John (1708/MyarHouse - bef 1717?) (since John in Mire House christened another son John in 1717, should we presume this one died young?)
      • Alice (1709/MyarHouse - ?)
      • Thomas (1712/M- - ?) (the page in the parish register is torn, but John's residence begins with 'M', so likely Myar House)
        • m.1736/Hexham,Slaley - Jane Fairlamb (the only Thomas Chatt marriage record in Northumberland in 1720-1750)
          • Mary (1742/Shiro - ?) (same Thomas?)
          • Jane (1748/UpperMireHouse - ?)
          • Richard (1752/MireHouse - ?) (see Richard in Low Dalton and Dotland in Whitley Chapel records below)
      • daughter (1714/MyarHouse - ?) (the page in the parish register is torn, so the daughter's name cannot be seen)
      • John in Mire House (1717/Mirehouse - ?)
        •  ? m.1744/HaydonBridge - Elizabeth Topping (the only other John Chatt marriage in Northumberland in 1740-1755. is this the same John?)
          • John (1746/MireMeadows - ?) (this is before John's 1752 marriage to Eliz Short. is this same John from a previous marriage, or is this a different John?)
        • m.1752/Hexham - Elizabeth Short
          • Hannah (1755/MireHouse - ?)
          • John (1757/Mirehouse - 1835/DukesfieldHall)
            •  ? m.1790/Slaley - Mary Fairlamb (only John Chatt marriage in Northumberland in 1775-1797)
          • Mary (1759/ - ?)
          • this family likely continues as "John in Moss House" in Whitley Chapel records below (Moss House is 0.2 miles NE of Mire House)
  • John in Wagtail (No John Chatt christenings in Northumberland in 1685-1705. Perhaps an unrecorded son of Thomas in Dotland?)
    • m.1725/Slaley - Ann Ivison. (This is the only Northumberland marriage for John Chatt in 1710-1732. There are no other John Chatts christening children in Northumberland in 1725-1750 than this one. An Ann Chatt widow of Wagtail was buried in Whitley in 1773.)
      • Thomas (1727/Shire - ?)
      • Sarah (1730/ - ?)

Chatt in Whitley Chapel (1764-~1839)

  • John in Moss House (probably the same John b. 1717 in Mire House in the Hexham records above)
    • m.1752/Hexham - Elizabeth Short

        • m.1790/Hexham - Elizabeth Carr (? - 1827,SiptonShield)
          • George (1791/PeacockHouse - ?)
            • Jane Oliver (not married)
              • John (1824/PeacockHouse - )
      • William (1764/MossHouse - ?)

      • Jane (1787/LowDalton - ?)
      • Ann (1790/Dotland - ?)
      • Elizabeth (1792/LowDalton - ?)
      • Richard (1796/Dotland - ?)
      • Margaret (1800/Dotland -?)

In the 1800s

Note that Whitley Chapel recorded no Chatt christenings, marriages, or burials between 1800-1824, making a clear gap between generations here.

Chatt places in Northumberland

Most of the christening records and some of the burial records give the abode of the persons, which are generally the name of a specific house or farm. Understanding where these places are, and which are close to one another, is very useful in deciding which records may belong to the same families or not. Here is a Google map of place names from the Chatt records, generally based on looking at 1865 Ordnance Survey maps available at old-maps.co.uk.
