Analysis

Robert Cowan moved from Botetourt County, VA tothe Nolachucky area of TN (Greene-County) sometime after 1776. Members of his family, and kinsmen, eventually moved south first into Blount County, TN before 1798, and later to Franklin County. Court records indicate that he was in Greene County, TN as late as 1783, when he gave testimony concerning the age of his son John. Land records show that he was alive as late as 1789 and deceased by 1797. The commonly cited DOD of 1784 appears to be unsupported.

For example:

10/22/1799 John Cowin, Andrew Cowin, Robt Cowin and Samuel Cowin, Blunt Co. TO Adam harmon (1) 120 acres on Nolachucky River. FOR: part of a 300 acre tract, NC # 569, to Robt Cowin, deceased. CONS: $660-2/3. (2) 100 acres on the Nolachucky. FOR: part of a 200 acre tract, NC # 740, to Robt Cowin, dec'd.

This record shows that Robert the father was deceased by 1799, and that his four sons, John, Andrew, Robert, and Samuel, had moved before this to Blount County TN. (This record was chosen for illustration because it unambiuously shows that this is the same land that Robert purchased in 1789, and that the Robert who purchased the land is now deceased in 1799. Thus the Robert who purchased the land could not be the son Robert, as he's mentioned as one of those selling the property.)
