Mary, wife of William Chase [27 March 2015]

Her surname is unknown, and all reputable sources atest to this.--Daniel Maxwell 13:14, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Again, I had to rollback the changes you've made. William Chases's origins are unknown. As far as I am aware, what is 'out there' are only theories, with no supporting evidence. Daniel Maxwell 13:16, 27 March 2015 (UTC)

Randall book [24 April 2015]

Would you consider adding editorial and research comments in the "comments" area for the individual or family, rather than in brackets and "sic" within the source documentation. This would lead other researchers to the more reliable data and maintain an accurate quotation from a source.

The comments were put in brackets because they apply to the source, not to the person on the page and so are probably not of general interest, only of interest to the reader considering the source. "Sic" in particular is used to indicate that I have no idea where the author's data came from, that I checked to make sure no obvious error was made copying it, but the fact remains that it says something different than the records, and yes, I usually mean to imply that it has been ignored for that reason. Placing them next to offending material avoids the necessity of long explanations re-establishing or re-identifying the error and its location, which would happen if they were removed to an area that many contain discussion of many and varied aspect of the persons life.

Kelley researchers realize that Eunice's work has errors and problems. We are working to correct them. We honor the amount of dedicated effort and work which went into her publication.

This book is a secondary source. You correct secondary sources by finding the older, more contemporary, more primary sources, like vital records of Yarmouth and elsewhere, wills, church records, etc. Which has the side effect of making the secondary source irrelevant. It turns out that secondary sources are mostly a research guide that speeds your research by pointing you to where to look for the primary information. This is more or less true of all secondary sources.

Unfortunately this particular work compiled a bunch of information but generally does not tell where the information comes from. By all appearances the author is merely a private individual who went to the expense of publishing her family tree. It does have errors, somewhat damaging its credibility. So, all-in-all, when there is an error found, in comparing it to more authoritative sources, one has a hard time doing anything but assuming it is a typo or error by the author. And any information this book provides is basically only a stop-gap until better sources can be found, because not knowing where the information comes from, makes it nearly useless the minute there is a potential conflict, real or imagined.

Once people re-do all of the author's research as best they can, and find where her assertions come from, we are then able to weigh the credibility of discrepant answers, and presumably a small number of the discrepancies may be resolved in agreement with the author. --Jrich 15:05, 24 April 2015 (UTC)

Parents of Eleanor Means [11 May 2015]

[copied from User talk:GayelKnott 12 May 2015]

There is apparently controversy regarding the parents of Eleanor Means, wife of John Diven. My Means family attributed the parents of William Means, brother of Eleanor, to John Means with his parents as Robert Means and Jane Irving, the latter a sister of a Revolutionary War general. I have never been able to find such a Jane Irving related to a general. there were two Revolutionary War generals with similar surnames, Irving and Ervine; neither apparently had a sister named Jane who married a Means.
Means family history, including the compilation by Foglesong and other sources, gives the parents of Eleanor Means wife of John Diven as Samuel Means and Elizabeth Clark. These sources also show another Eleanor Means, a daughter of John Means and Elizabeth Clark, and married to James Montgomery.
I have been investigating these Means families and individuals for about 30 years and have not found substantial evidence to support either parentage. We need to do more work!

Hi, Dick. Thanks for your comment about Eleanor's parents. I've copied it over to the talk page for them, and added a note to Eleanor's page. I'm also replying here on your page since you chose not to watch the page where you left your message.

Basically, if you have information contrary to what is posted on Eleanor's page, please feel free to add it, along with your sources. Sources are really what make a wiki site like this work, particularly where people are encouraged to collaborate by keeping all information on a given ancestor on a single page. Often, we, as researchers, do have different information, which is why it's so important to both list our sources, and to evaluate them (and explain them if need be).

I have to admit, the sources currently used for Eleanor could definitely be improved upon. My real interest is Person:Emerson Liscum, the husband of her granddaughter May, and I feel there are some problems in the information provided for him, as well. I added Eleanor primarily because I had information from the sources cited. Again, if you have better information, please add it, along with your sources.
