John Liscum married Phebe Hamilton, their children were . . . Emerson Hamilton, he was born July 16, 1841, Entered the U.S. army at the time of the Civil War, was promoted from one official position to another until his death, which occurred in China during the boxer Uprising there, he was getting supplies to his troups when killed, was a colonel when he went to China, but at the time of his death, July 13, 1900 his general’s commission was on the way to him. He married May Diven. His childhood was in Burlington, Vt. His body was buried in Arlington Cemetery, Washington, D.C. When Gen. Emerson Liscum went to the Phillipines in 1899, to help in trouble there, he was working with Gen MacArthur, father of Gen. Douglas MacArthur.

LISCUM, Emerson Hamilton, soldier, was born in Huntington, Vt., July 16, 1841; son of John and Phebe (Hamilton) Liscum; grandson of Peletiah and Sally (Campbell) Liscum, and a descendant of Captain John and Rachel (Day) Liscum of Gloucester, Mass. Captain John Liscum was born at Gloucester, April 16, 1720; son of Peletiah and Ann (Bradley) Liscum. {Added Note: This is unconfirmed, and documentation has yet to be found.] The family removed to Burlington, where he attended school and became a corporal in the “Howard Guards.”. . . . [Civil War service detailed] . . . . He married May daughter of Gen. A. S. Diven, (q.v.) and Amanda (Beers) Diven of Ehoira, N.Y. . . . Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States in 1891. . . . Spanish American Wars in Cuba, Phillipines . . . .to China in June 1900, died at Tientsin, China, July 13, 1900.

COLONEL LISCUM BURIED. Remains of the Hero of Tientsin Now at Best. WASHINGTON. Dec. 11.— The remains of Colonel Emerson H. Llscum, which have been lying In state In this city since yesterday, were Interred In Arlington Cemetery this afternoon. The escort; under command of Colonel William A. Rafferty, consisted of a squadron of cavalry under Major E. D. Thomas, Battery F, Second Artillery. Captain C. D. Parkhurst, and a battalion of Marines, commanded by Major Carman. At the cemetery Rev. Mackey Smith, rector of St. John's Episcopal Church, conducted the serviec3 for the dead. Three volleys were fired over the grave and the sounding of "taps" completed the ceremonies. President McKinley, members of the Cabinet and members of the Vermont delegation In Congress attended* the funeral. The honorary, pallbearers were: Brigadier General A. W. Greely, Brigadier General J. C. Brecfclnrldge, Brigadier General N. G. Liebter, Brigadier General M. E. Bates, Captain Thomas Perry, U. S. N., and Lieutenant Colonel C. B. Edwards, U. S. V.
