Next step: Review your GEDCOM [20 October 2011]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Jenkins ancestors 1011 ged.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Jenkins ancestors 1011ged.ged [22 October 2011]

Hello Lana a2000, I am one of the volunteer admins here at WeRelate. I reviewed your gedcom and there is just one item I'll need you to edit before I can upload the file. Under the People tab, there is a Larsdatter Larsen (Nielsen), Maren. Please click Edit on that page and move any alternate names to a separate line by clicking on "Add alternate name". The primary name should be kept in the first name fields and not include any parentheses. When you are done, you can go to the Import tab and press the "Ready to Import" button. I'll import your file after that. Thank you! --Jennifer (JBS66) 15:37, 22 October 2011 (EDT)

Jennifer, I am new to WeRelate and the Jenkins.ged was my first attempt. I would like to amend that .ged and replace it with a better one. Can that be done after it is imported? Or should I remove that ged submission and upload the right one now?--Lana a2000 17:52, 22 October 2011 (EDT)

It would be easier for you to remove this gedcom and import your new one. You can remove this file by going to the Overview tab in the gedcom review, and click on the Remove this GEDCOM button. --Jennifer (JBS66) 17:57, 22 October 2011 (EDT)

After I uploaded the "Archibald and ancestors" gedcom, I realized there were a couple errors. I deleted it, fixed the errors and then uploaded it again. It has been reviewed and is ready to import.

Is there a way to edit mistakes in my gedcom without deleting it and uploading it again? Should I have deleted the "Archibald and ancestors" tree before uploading the gedcom the second time -- even though I hadn't had the first one imported yet?--Lana a2000 11:20, 27 October 2011 (EDT)

If the errors are minor (ie, edit a birth/death date) then a page can be edited in gedcom review by clicking on the Edit link on each page. If the errors are more significant (like duplicate families or children linked to the wrong parents), these are best fixed on your home computer and re-uploaded. Since your Archibald ancestors tree had no people in it, you did not need to delete the tree. --Jennifer (JBS66) 11:25, 27 October 2011 (EDT)

--WeRelate agent 10:52, 31 October 2011 (EDT)

I am replacing the first Murray ancestors gedcom I submitted, but the second one has only minor changes. Several of the children are shown as born before the marriage of their parents because they were either illegitimate and were adopted by their mother's new husband, or because they were born as the result of an earlier marriage and then adopted by the second husband. In my genealogy software, the adoption is noted in the relationship to the father.

I cannot find any duplication of individuals in my database. I wonder if the error relating to a duplication of John Archibald and Isabell Archibald is because they also appear in my "Archibald ancestors" tree. There is an intermingling of cousins in those two trees.--Lana a2000 23:29, 31 October 2011 (EDT)

I don't see a warning in the gedcom that is currently in admin review (Murray ancestors 1011ged.ged). Generally, a warning of duplication means that it suspected a family as being duplicates within that gedcom file. If there are suspected duplicates with families already uploaded to WeRelate, those would appear in the Family Matches tab for merging. The Murray file in the queue appears ready to import - is it ok if I do that? --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:40, 1 November 2011 (EDT)

Yes, please import the Murray ancestors gedcom. And thank you for your comments.--Lana a2000 11:46, 1 November 2011 (EDT)

When I upload a GEDCOM, what is the reason some of the individuals are excluded?--Lana a2000 23:31, 31 October 2011 (EDT)

Both living and "early" people are excluded from gedcom import. Pages for living people are not permitted on WeRelate. As for the "early" people, those born before 1750 are excluded from gedcom import. We ask that users enter these people manually instead. We have found that to avoid duplication and have well-sourced pages for early individuals, entering these people by hand is preferable.
When you have a question about gedcom import or using WeRelate, it would be best if you could leave messages at WeRelate talk:Review GEDCOM or WeRelate talk:Support. There are more administrators that are watching our support pages. Thanks, --Jennifer (JBS66) 07:30, 1 November 2011 (EDT)

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [4 November 2011]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Haderlie ancestors_1011ged.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate.

Stony Hill, Cowpits--and Coalpit [23 March 2013]

Thanks for answering. I have now found Cowpits and Stony Hill on the expansion of the little Google map. They will shortly have latitude and longitude co-ordinates added.

Now, what about Coalpit? Do you think it might be Cowpits? I noticed they were birthplaces of father and son.

Your answer made me take a look at one of the references I am putting on each of the parish pages: the maps from the National Library of Scotland. These are rather fantastic once you get into the way the website is put together. This morning I found a list of maps titled OS One-Inch Second Edition, Scotland, 1898-1904 on which the parishes are coloured individually. Sheet 32 Edinburgh (http://maps.nls.uk/os/view/?sid=74400788#zoom=6&lat=16568&lon=36948&layers=BT) is the local one. Unfortunately this series is not geo-referenced and I had to go to the One-Inch Series 1885-1900 to get the co-ords.

You have really looked into this part of the world. Usually, when I look at other people's trees I never see more than one generation in the UK. Since that's where I live, I so often want to assure people that the whole country is still full of people--and full of little places with names, even though the places may be less than a mile apart.

Thanks for your help on these. I have now found Coalpit and placed it with longitude and latitude and given a reference:

The National Library of Scotland has a map from the First Ordnance Survey One-Inch to the Mile Maps of Scotland 1856-1891 that shows this area in the middle of the 19th century. Many of the places cannot be found even on maps circa 1900.

which is being used for Stoney Hill and Cowpits as well (even though they are still on today's maps) and for Inveresk village.

I have been watching the Rootstech webcasts and found Steve Tanner's talk on mapping and genealogy on Thursday very interesting. --goldenoldie 03:27, 23 March 2013 (EDT)
