Place pages [3 October 2010]

Hello Kmrob, welcome to WeRelate.

I am a volunteer admin here, and I noticed that you have created a few pages for places such as Place:McDonald Hospital, Warsaw, Kosciusko, Indiana, United States. We ask that people do not make pages for locations such as hospitals, churches, and street addresses. Pages for cemeteries are fine.

To use your Person:Louisa Hart (4) page as an example: you can list that she died in Place:Warsaw, Kosciusko, Indiana, United States and then put McDonald Hospital in the description field that follows. Please review your list of place contributions, edit the pages that link to them (by clicking on What links here), and then mark the page for Speedy Delete. If you need any help with this process, just let me know. Thank you, --Jennifer (JBS66) 06:05, 3 October 2010 (EDT)

I see your point. will refrain from doing that (rookie mistake?).

In my defense, wouldn't make sense to have hospitals, as births, deaths, illneses, etc listed for event fields all take place there?--Kmrob 10:00, 3 October 2010 (EDT)

Rookie mistake... well, maybe... Though I have to say that you joined only yesterday, you're doing a great job at creating person and family pages, making cemetery pages, etc... this mistake is pretty minor. I'd say that we have a lot of help pages which can be hard to digest - heck, I've been here for some time and I continue to learn new things.
In terms of scalability, I think allowing places beyond geographic locations is difficult to maintain. I use the RootsMagic software, and they even suggest putting place details (address, hospital, and cemetery) in a description field. Since WeRelate allows GEDCOM downloads, compatibility with software may be part of the decision. --Jennifer (JBS66) 11:17, 3 October 2010 (EDT)

Gaerte/Gaetre Cemetery [23 March 2011]

Hi Kmrob, I'm a volunteer administrator here on WeRelate. I noticed that you added pages for Gaerte Cemetery and Gaetre Cemetery in Miami County, Indiana. Are they the same place? (I'm presuming they are, since you have the same coordinates for each.) If it is a situation where the cemetery is known by both names, we can keep one page and include the other name in the "Alternate name" field. Whichever page would be the "alternate name" should then be redirected to the main page. Let me know if you have any questions or if you want any help. Thanks! -- Amy (Ajcrow) 07:21, 21 March 2011 (EDT)

Hi Rob!

Not a problem at all! Since both pages have links going to them, it might be easiest to redirect one to the other. To do so, enter this as the first line of text in the text box: #redirect[[page title]]. So if you were going to redirect the one without the first R to the one with, you would enter #redirect[[Place:Gaerte Cemetery, Miami, Indiana, United States]]

If you create a page and you see that you named it the wrong thing -- misspelled a word, left out a word, etc -- you can rename the page. Just click "Rename" on the left-hand side of the page and enter the name that it should be. If there isn't already a page with that name, the rename will work. If there is, you'll get an error message. You don't have to worry that you'll over-write a page that's already there; the system will prevent you from doing that.

Glad you're liking WeRelate so much! We're glad to have you here! -- Amy (Ajcrow) 17:16, 23 March 2011 (EDT)

Family Photo [12 April 2011]

Hi,

I'm a volunteer administrator on WeRelate, and I noticed you uploaded this photo - Image:Family10.jpg. I wanted to let you know that it would be a good idea to change the name of this image. The system is presently set up to let you "update" an image - it assumes that if you upload something called "Family10.jpg", you are the same person uploading the same image as the last time the name was used. In other words, if anyone else uploads a photo with that name, it will override your file. Since the name is pretty generic, I wanted to warn you about the possibility. You can fix it by uploading the photo again with a different name.

Also, it appears as if some of the people linked to the photo are living. Living people are generally not permitted on the site unless they are famous (for example). Living people needed as a "bridge" between deceased people can be entered with a first name "Living" and no other information. All others should be deleted (or, if they are actually deceased, an approximate death date should be entered). Thanks and let you know if you have any questions.--Amelia 17:09, 12 April 2011 (EDT)
