Next step: Review your GEDCOM [3 October 2011]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded DonkleJrCleanedPlacesPrivate.GED, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Place pages [14 March 2012]

Hi! I'm Amy, one of the volunteer admins here on WeRelate. I noticed you've added some Place pages. Thank you! Just a couple of notes -- the standard here on WeRelate is to not include the word "Township" in a Plage page title. The exception is if there is a town in that county with the same name. For example, in Henry County, Indiana there is both a town and and township with the name Greensboro. To tell them apart, the township is "Greensboro (township), Henry, Indiana, United States". Also, places that aren't cemeteries have at most 4 levels of hierarchy: town/township, county, state, country. That is why I renamed your Pleasant Township page -- dropped the word "township" and removed Angola. If you have any questions, please let me know. Also, there is a section on naming Place pages here. Thanks! -- Amy (Ajcrow) 08:04, 14 March 2012 (EDT)

Your latest gedcom import [13 March 2021]

Hi, I have just reviewed your gedcom and approved it for import. I just want to remind you that of the 4 new Persons that were imported, 2 of them are duplicates of these existing entries: Person:Robert Murdock (12) and Person:Tom Eby (1) and that you should merge the new ones with the existing ones. Cheers, --robert.shaw 19:50, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

I just noticed one dup, Tom Eby, and have merged. I'll do the same with the other.

Can you confirm my understanding how I created the dups? Apparently during the merge I had an opportunity to check for matches and failed to detect them? Is that correct?

Or could it have been something else? I'm greatly embarrassed that I failed at this basic task. Any pointers would be appreciated. Thanks.--donkle3 20:36, 11 March 2021 (UTC)

Donkle3, You probably didn't know the implications of the fact that Robert Murdock was not listed as a matched Person. I don't think the mechanism is made clear anywhere, so it's not surprising you missed a dup. A person in a Gedcom is marked as a duplicate only if they are a member of a Family that is recognized as a duplicate. Apparently the design of the software is such that it considers it safe to recognize a person as a duplication only when there is the additional matching of a connected parent, child, or spouse. Probably wise, since there can be many Persons with the same name and some also with close-enough other data like birth and death; the tighter constraint of having a family match as well avoids many false matches.
So, in your Gedcom neither Tom Eby nor Robert Murdock have family membership in a family that was already on WeRelate. Maybe that was unavoidable with Tom Eby, but from the nature of the entries I presume that you could have included in your Gedcom a family connection from Robert to a parent since you probably had that in your working database as well as it having existed on WeRelate. That's natural if you only had updates to make for Robert and not for either parent or the family. But including such a family connection is what makes matching work, so it's probably best to include the family. If that had happened, then you would have had the opportunity to do the match-verify for Robert's family under the Matches tab, and then do the data compare and update for Robert, just as I have seen you have done with other matched people with your gedcoms. So including a connected "unnecessary" family is something to consider doing on any future Gedcoms you generate for import to WeRelate. --robert.shaw 06:17, 12 March 2021 (UTC)

Very enlightening and helpful. Thanks! I had not considered the importance of including connected family members in GEDCOMs, but it makes perfect sense. I'll follow that guideline if the future. Thanks again!--donkle3 19:37, 13 March 2021 (UTC)

You're not done yet!

Now that you have uploaded FTM Joellen branch all decsd rels 169.ged into our review program, it is time for you to match your data to ours. Your next step is to review and resolve any potential warnings that your file might be showing and to match place names, source names and families to pages that may already exist in our database.

Notes:

  • You must complete all the steps before your GEDCOM can be considered for import. - We will keep your file in the queue for three months to give you time to finish, and you do not have to finish all at once.
  • If you did not follow the instructions for preparing your data before uploading your file or if your file does not contain at least one date and place for each person with sources, it is likely that your file will be rejected.
  • Volunteers are here to help. Please read the instructions first, but if you get stuck or have any questions, you can leave a message on the page for the GEDCOM review team. One of our volunteers will respond shortly.
  • Once you have completed the review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import on the last screen, one of our volunteer administrators will review the file again and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24-48 hours. Please allow a little extra time around the holidays. When the import is finalized, you will receive a follow up message here on your Talk page.

WeRelate doesn't allow pages for living individuals [15 May 2021]

Hi

I notice that you created pages for living individuals, I assume in an attempt to share your entire family tree with your relatives. WeRelate policy doesn't allow pages for living individuals, even if their dates aren't entered. It is a place to consolidate our research on deceased generations, so that each of us building our own family tree doesn't have to replicate that shared ancestry nor do all the research on our own.

If you want to create a tree with living individuals to share with other family members, there are a number of other sites that will protect the privacy of pages for living individuals and allow you to choose who to share the information with. Unfortunately, WeRelate doesn't have that functionality.

I am deleting the pages for living individuals, in compliance with WeRelate policy.--DataAnalyst 15:35, 15 May 2021 (UTC)
