Next step: Review your GEDCOM [18 January 2014]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded Bury Gedcom.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate. You need to review your GEDCOM before it can finish importing. We will keep your GEDCOM in the queue for two weeks to give you time to review it.

Note: if your gedcom contains many errors or multiple families, we’d ask that you resolve and correct the errors, delete this gedcom and re-submit it without the errors before merging it with families already on WeRelate. If the gedcom is very large, we’d suggest breaking it up into separate files (or families) and importing them one at a time, which makes the review and correction process easier.

Click here to review your GEDCOM

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Needs more data [25 May 2014]

hello,

I review gedcoms before they are uploaded into the community database. WeRelate is not like other genealogy websites where people upload gedcoms and never come back. This is a community. WeRelate exists to allow genealogist to collaborate on common ancestors. So, we ask everyone to clean their data before upload. Your gedcom has a lot of people who aren't connected to anyone else in your tree. If you look at the family tab, you will see that almost none of the people have spouses or any other data on their family page. Marriage pages must have a date, a spouse or a child. Please exclude the marriages without dates, spouses or children, and resubmit. Thank you, and welcome to WeRelate.--sq 16:44, 24 May 2014 (UTC)

Thank you. I understand that page better now. 3 people were removed, these were 2nd/3rd marriages and I planned to enter the spouses manually - won't do that again. One person I left on is Maud Hosler, she appears with her husband Bergman, and did not have another marriage so I wasn't sure if removing her would mess things up.--Diane Hosler 14:54, 25 May 2014 (UTC)

Next step: Review your GEDCOM [30 January 2015]

You're not done yet!

WeRelate is different from most family tree websites. By contributing to WeRelate you are helping to create Pando for genealogy, a free, unified family tree that combines the best information from all contributors.

Now that you have uploaded RuprightCorll.ged, your next step is to review what your pages will look like, review any potential warnings, and combine (merge) people in your GEDCOM with matching people already on WeRelate.

Once you have finished your review and marked your GEDCOM Ready to import, one of our administrators will review your GEDCOM and finalize the import. This usually happens within 24 hours. You will receive a message here when the pages have been created.

Please check the birthplace for Herm Elbers. It does not look right.

It would be great and the page would look more like the WR conventions if you could create a second name entry and tag it "immigrant name" and move his Americanized name "Henry" there.

Laug research [28 July 2015]

Hello, I am doing research on the Lucas Elbers (1823-1876)lineage. He would have been my 2x great grandfather. Margaret Ellen Elbers (Lucas (1866-1933)and Henrietta Walt) was my grandmothers mom. My grandmother is 94 years and in failing health. I found out she knew some about her family but nothing serious had ever been done to trace the relatives back. So I decided about 10 years ago to work on it. I have been able to trace the lineage back as far as you have at this point.I plan on presenting all the information to my grandma while I visit her next month.

I am stuck on Zwenne Kempkers, though. But I wanted to let you know that through my research I have obtained a photo of Lucas Sr. from Coopersville Reformed Church. He was the first elder and one of the main influences that began the Polkton Reformed church (Now Coopersville Reformed). I have learned a great deal. I want to thank you for posting all of the obits that you have on the family. It may make it easier to see if there is more info out there about Lucas and Zwenne. I am also stuck as to who the correct parents for Aaltje (Ellen) Vredeveld. If I may share a theory with you.....there is one other Vredeveld listed in polkton Lammije (sp?) who married Klaas Kloosterhuis. I found a person of the same name along with Aaltje on Family Search within the same family. But I have not been able to verify if it is indeed a match.

Where were you able to get the obits? Online or at the library? I am planning a trip to MI this next month and am lining up places I need to go to get information that I can not get from the internet.

Also, do you have any other tips on what to do when you hit a brick wall?

Thank you again for the work you have done! It has helped verify a lot of dates for me.

Clara Hosler and Thomas Budd [13 August 2016]

Hi there Diane, I was searching for information on Clara Hosler and came across her page here. There is a reference to Joan Budd Conley as a source of information for the date and place of Clara's marriage to Thomas Budd. I am a descendant of Thomas Budd and would like to confirm the details of the marriage, and also get more information about the descendants of Clara and Thomas if possible. I have located Clara and Thomas in the 1911, 1916, and 1921 censuses, but I believe there may have been other children born after 1921 (Thomas died in 1929). There are other children mentioned in Clara's obituary, but I'm not sure if these were Thomas and Clara's children.

[conversation continued by email] -Deedee0 19:31, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Good to hear from you Darcie! and congratulations on using this site. By all means add what you have for the Budd family. Joan did not site her source for the marriage record, but she is active in genealogy. From the information she sent me, there were 8 children in the Clara/Thomas Budd family. I will send you her contact information if you will e-mail me at drhosler1@gmail.com. Diane--Diane Hosler 21:01, 13 August 2016 (UTC)

Friendly reminder when importing files [7 May 2017]

Hello. I am a volunteer administrator here and member of our WeRelate:Mentoring team. While importing the last couple of files from you, I noticed that the Place matching part of the review had not been completed. Luckily your files were small (thank you for that!), so it didn't take too much time for me to complete, but I wanted to reach out to you to remind you to complete this step on future files. Place and Source matching is important and is easiest to do during the review process, so we ask everyone to take a little time on the front end to sync their data with ours.

The best way to minimize this task is to stick to a standard way of entering place names in your genealogy program before you create any GEDCOMs. Make sure that all places are entered as "Town, County, State, Country" with the commas (ex. De Peyster, St. Lawrence, New York, United States). County specification is important as many states have multiple towns with the same name, but in different counties. If you get in the habit of always doing this, your GEDCOMs will be a breeze to import here (and other sites as well). If you have any questions, please feel free to ask either here on your Talk page or on our Support page. One of our volunteers will respond shortly. Best Wishes, --cos1776 13:09, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks, I noticed that so I did look up the information for about 3 of them to add, but realized 2 of them were already in your data base a couple of times. They didn't show up as a match. Should I have done a search for them? I did add the missing one for DeKalb Junction, hopefully correctly. I think I misunderstand what to do. If there is a match and I don't delete it I understood it would automatically be used -- correct? Thanks for all you do to help us!--Diane Hosler 16:27, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
Since in my data base I do use the town, county, state, am wondering if because I use Saint rather than St. that makes a difference? For Family Search and Ancestry that's what they want, so I assumed that was the standard.--Diane Hosler 16:31, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
Yes - ideally you would be able to match every text string you entered for a place in your file (showing in the left column) to one of our existing Place pages (right column). If the program was not able to figure out which place you meant, it shows up as a blank in the right column, and we ask you to tell the program which place you meant. This does require searching the database to find the match, but I can tell you that with the exception of cemeteries, there is almost always a page already in existence, so it is rare to have to add a new page.
The trick then is finding the right page. Some say that using a search engine to get meaningful results is a special skill onto itself! :) You asked about entering Saint vs. St. You are absolutely correct in thinking that the search engine can only find something if someone has entered it somewhere. If you take a look at the place page for St. Lawrence, you will see that (thankfully) the variations of "Saint" and "St." were entered as Alt names - so the search engine should have no problem with that. I've noticed that it is usually misspellings or the absence of punctuation that trips up the auto-matching. If you notice that you left out the commas or misspelled a word, you can choose to either tell the program to go ahead and match what you entered to the the existing Place page -or- you could right click on your text string and select "what references this place". This will show you which pages contain that text string. If it is only one or two, you may choose to just go ahead and fix the place entry directly on those pages, therefore eliminating the need to do a manual match.
When using the search engine, a big trick I use is to "cast a wide net", so to speak, and then try to zero in on the intended place. If we take your Dekalb example above, a search on "Dekalb" in "New York" returns 3 possibilities from which to choose. In looking over the history for Place:DeKalb, St. Lawrence, New York, United States, I see that another user removed the word "Junction" from the page title a few years ago. I'm not sure why, so I would have to do a little more digging on that, but what you did (adding the alternate name) was exactly correct and will help users to find that page in the future, so thank you for adding that.
I hope that I have answered your questions. If not, please just let me know. Regards, --cos1776 18:30, 7 May 2017 (UTC)

Thanks. I will watch in the future and coordinate the source data base in my system with yours, and make these current adjustments, since there's more to come.--Diane Hosler 19:11, 7 May 2017 (UTC)
