Response to your comment on Knarrows talk page

Hi, once we get it working we'll include a notice about GEDCOM re-upload in the quarterly newsletter. It should only be a couple of months' work, but I need to first spend the Summer working on some usability enhancements.

55,000 people is quite a lot! That definitely puts you among our high-volume users. Please let me know if you notice any slowdowns or experience any other problems. Keeping each individual GEDCOM to 10,000-15,000 people and uploading each GEDCOM into a new family tree will help a lot.--Dallan 21:30, 11 July 2007 (MDT)

Thank you for your quick response. Yes I do break down my family lines into small GEDCOM's for each of them. If you have time you can look at a listing of what I do at My Homepage. I admire your dedication to creating this website. I surely hope it works out for you! I look forward to seeing how the re-upload thingy works out. Good luck in your summer project!--Msscarlet1957 07:10, 12 July 2007 (MDT)

HICKEY.GED is being held for review

The pages from "HICKEY.GED" have not yet been generated because they appear to match pages from a GEDCOM you have previously imported to WeRelate. Please be patient while we take a look at your GEDCOM. If it turns out that the people in HICKEY.GED don't really overlap people you have imported previously, your pages will be generated right after the review, which should happen tomorrow (or Monday if tomorrow falls on a weekend).

If you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in HICKEY.GED, you have two options:

  1. Open the tree containing the information from the previous GEDCOM using Family Tree Explorer and delete the tree, then create a new tree and re-import this GEDCOM, or
  2. If the two GEDCOMs don't overlap that much, leave a message for Npowell. We'll go ahead with the import, after which you'll want to merge the overlapping people by hand.

You've been busy!

Hi,

I checked out your homepage -- you have an AMAZING amount of material there! It looks like you've been doing this for quite some time :-).

I wanted to let you know that I'll begin working on GEDCOM re-uploads the end of next month. In the meantime you've probably noticed that we run a simple matching heuristic on newly-uploaded GEDCOM's to check whether they overlap (have a lot of people in common with) the GEDCOM's that the person has uploaded previously. If it looks like there is a lot of overlap, we ask the person whether the previously-uploaded GEDCOM should be deleted first, so that when the new GEDCOM is uploaded it doesn't end up creating a large set of duplicate pages.

It looks like three of your GEDCOM's: HICKEY.GED, RITTER1957.GED, and RIDENOUR1957.GED, were flagged by the matching heuristic as possibly overlapping other GEDCOM's that you have successfully uploaded. However, the matching heuristic is not perfect so these GEDCOM's might not in fact overlap your other GEDCOM's (or overlap only slightly). You had mentioned earlier that you store different lines in different files; is it ok for me to assume that these three GEDCOM files don't really overlap the other GEDCOM's you have uploaded, in which case I'll release the hold on them so that they can complete the upload process?

--Dallan 01:18, 14 July 2007 (MDT)

Ah, I see you've already responded to Nathan. We'll make sure they're uploaded.--Dallan 01:20, 14 July 2007 (MDT)

I began my genealogy research in 1980, and have been on the Internet since 1999. Well here is my "process"..
I use "The Master Genealogist" software. I have ALL names in one database. TMG has ability to export a certain filtered family line to a GEDCOM. It also has ability to change the names within the files to a different color, so I can visually see my progress. As I get a family line all reviewed and researched (as far as I can) I create a GEDCOM for that line. Now there is overlap.. and sometimes quite a bit. I start at the oldest family member that I have in a particular surname and filter to include all descendants. This very likely always ends with my children's generation, thus it includes me, and them and any generation before us that overlaps between other files. There is no other way to do it and not have overlap, unless I filter out to a certain number of generations, thus loosing family member's of a certain surname's descendancy (spell checker says this is not a word!). So yes the files greatly overlap sometimes, it is not a perfect world. If I uploaded my entire GEDCOM at once there would be no overlap, but that is not what I want to do, as many names have not yet been reviewed. I hope this is not too confusing of an explanation on my part

ADELSPERGER1957.GED appears to overlap a previously-imported GEDCOM [10 November 2007]

The pages from this GEDCOM have not yet been generated because they appear to match pages from a GEDCOM you have previously imported to WeRelate.

If you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM and you want to replace that tree with this GEDCOM, you need to delete that tree first so duplicates aren't created when you import this GEDCOM. Go to the Family Tree page, scroll down to the bottom of the page, and click on the "delete" link next to that tree. Please be aware that any pages in that tree that are being watched by others won't get deleted. Once that tree is deleted you can create a new tree and re-upload this GEDCOM into it. (We're planning to make re-uploading GEDCOM files much simpler later this Fall.)

If you don't think you have already imported a GEDCOM containing people in this GEDCOM, or if the two GEDCOM's don't overlap that much, leave a message for Dallan or send an email to dallan@WeRelate.org and we'll go ahead with the import.

merging, uploading and such [17 March 2008]

I just added a comment to the merging page. I'm pretty sure that you will be able to avoid re-importing your data base into your home software. While it may be something of a one-time hassle, I believe that you will be able to add the werelate page designator to your records, in the same way you can currently obtain a "permanent link" to a page. In any event, I would think it's the sort of information you would want to put into your home data base anyway - a link to the appropriate werelate page for a person seems like a useful source.

Of course, I would like to hear this from Dallan too, but I don't think you need to be too worried.--Jrm03063 13:41, 17 March 2008 (EDT)

Are you related to Mary Stiffler?

She is some degree of great Grandmother to my wife: Ann Helsel.

It is always nice to join trees.

Allen Morris--Gam3 20:45, 24 April 2008 (EDT)

No, Allen, She is no blood relation to me. I am watching this page as it is part of my cousins Database and I am watching all pages of his GEDCOM, since he and I have many common relatives. I have been trying to go through his tree and merge where I see connections and fix many of his PLACE pages, which need editing so they will show up on the Pedi-map. Jon Jay Shultz is the owner of the tree that contains the Mary Stiffler you inquire about. I do not know if she is a relative to Jon or not. Jon has a website at MyFamily.com which he pays for. All are welcome, would you like me to send you an invitation with a username and password, to enter and maybe connect with cousins there?
