Village of Olive

Olive historically was a post village in the northeastern part of the township of Olive, county of Noble, state of Ohio, United States of America. It was situated along Salt Run, a tributary of Duck Creek, in the southwest quarter of section 2 of township 6, range 9 (1st Congressional Survey). The place is now a part of the incorporated village of Caldwell, and Olive Street takes its name from the historical village.

History

As early as 1820, Robert McKee opened a store and engaged in the mercantile business, at first in a very small way. His goods were brought from Barnesville, through the woods, on pack horses, a distance of thirty-one miles. Soon after, the Olive Post Office was established on 17 Sept. 1822, and supplied with a weekly mail from Marietta. McKee was the postmaster. He continued the mercantile business many years and was succeeded by his son David.

The village of Olive was surveyed and platted by John F. Talley, surveyor of Morgan County, in February 1839, for the proprietor, Robert McKee. The plat was recorded 17 July 1841. An addition by Robert McKee was made in 1857, and an addition by Jasper McKee was made in 1871.

After Noble County was erected in 1851, the first courts for the new county were held in the village. In the following years the nearby village of Caldwell was platted and made the county seat. As Caldwell grew steadily and substantially, Olive declined. The post office was discontinued on 12 January 1865.
