The Norwich District is an extension of the City of Norwich beyond the boundaries of the city as they existed before 1974. With the Local Government Act of 1972 the county of Norfolk, like other English counties, adopted a new form of local government which combined the old borough-urban district-rural district system into a series of much larger metropolitan and non-metropolitan districts.

Norwich absorbed some nearby parishes in 1974, but its area did not change to any great degree. Norwich District had a population of 213,166 according to the 2011 UK Census and is very urban in character. The suburban areas on the western, northern and eastern sides include Costessey, Taverham, Hellesdon, Bowthorpe, Old Catton, Sprowston and Thorpe St. Andrew.
