Hayes is now part of the London Borough of Bromley in Greater London. It lies south of the town of Bromley and was part of the municipal borough of Beckenham before 1965.

Both William Pitt the Elder, 1st Earl of Chatham (1708–1778), and his son William Pitt the Younger (1759–1806) lived at the house named Hayes Place.
