A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Hartington and Hartington Hall from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:
- "HARTINGTON and HARTINGTON HALL, two townships in Hartburn parish, Northumberland; 2 miles N of Cambo. Acres: 1,935 and 1,005. Populations: 81 and 25. Houses: 15 and 6."
Hartington and Hartington Hall were originally two townships in the ancient parish of Hartburn, Northumberland. From 1894 until 1955 they were part of Rothbury Rural District.They became separate civil parishes in 1866, but in 1955 they were both abolished and absorbed into the neighbouring parish of Rothley.
Hartington Hall township and parish was to the south of Hartington.
