Located inNorthumberland, England

Tynedale Ward was one of the ancient divisions of Northumberland, equivalent to hundreds and wapentakes in counties further south.

A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Tynedale Ward from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"TINDALE, or Tyndale, a ward in the S of Northumberland; named from the Tyne valley; and containing 30 parishes, and 3 parts. Acres: 514,660. Population in 1831: 42,414; in 1861: 48,723. Houses: 8,994."

On the earliest of the maps listed below, Tynedale covers only one-third of the parishes listed below. The rest will be found in the portions labelled Bellingham and Haltwhistle. In other words, Tynedale Ward covered the midwestern quarter of Northumberland. An even earlier map (1832) outlines the whole of Tynedale Ward, but does not label many parishes.

This Ordnance Survey map of 1832 shows the boundaries of the ancient wards of Northumberland. The coordinates given above are those for the modern Tynedale District (1974-2009) which covered a very similar area.
