A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Butterlaw from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:

"BUTTERLAW, a township in Newburn parish, Northumberland; 5 miles W by N of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. Acres: 250. Population: 10. Houses: 3."

Butterlaw was a township in the ancient parish of Newburn and became a separate civil parish in 1866. From 1894 until 1974 it was part of Castle Ward Rural District. In 1974 it was absorbed into the City of Newcastle upon Tyne District in the newly formed county of Tyne and Wear
