A Vision of Britain through Time provides the following description of Appletree Hundred from John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales of 1870-72:
- "APPLETREE, a hundred in Derbyshire. It is bounded on the W by Staffordshire; and it contains Belper, part of Ashborne, twenty-nine parishes, and parts of five other parishes. Acres: 97,273. Population in 1851: 35,848; in 1861: 34,702. Houses: 7,242."
Appletree Hundred had one detached section within the county and two closely spaced detached sections in Staffordshire.
