William Worbey was baptised on 20th November 1825 at Great Wymondley in Hertfordshire, son of Charlotte Worbey, formerly Primett, and her husband George Worbey, a labourer and publican. The family did not live in Great Wymondley itself, but at Walsworth, in the neighbouring parish of Hitchin. William appears in the 1841 census living at Walsworth with his parents and siblings.

In 1851, aged 25, he was married at Hitchin to a Caroline Dickens. She was ten years older than him and was originally from the small village of Astwick, a few miles north of Hitchin. Shortly after their marriage they appear in the 1851 census living with William's parents at Walsworth. William was working as an agricultural labourer. William and Caroline had three sons, all born at Walsworth between 1851 and 1856. William's father died in 1852, and his mother died in 1867.

Perhaps in order to pretend that Caroline was younger than William they gave wildly varying ages for themselves in the censuses; in 1861 he gave his age approximately correct but she claimed to be two years younger than him, and in 1871 she gave her age approximately correct but he claimed to be four years older than her. The combined effect of these misleading ages is to suggest that William aged 21 years between the 1861 and 1871 censuses.

William died in 1874, aged 48. Caroline outlived him by twelve years, and appears in the 1881 census living with their youngest son Walter.
