... The Rev. Mr. Wilkinson is distinguished for being the first Anglican clergyman in Maryland, although services of the Church of England had been read by layman from the beginning. He was the son of the Rev. Gabriel Wilkinson, born 1576, in Yorkshire, a graduate of Merton College, Oxford, and vicar of Woooburn, Buckinghamshire, until his death on December 17, 1658. William, the son, was born 1612, entered Magdalen College at fourteen, and received his master of arts in 1632. Within three years he had married and settled in the New World.

On November 20, 1635, William Wilkinson, Minister, received 700 acres of land at "Linhaven, commonly known Chisopeian river, west on Thomas Keeling and Georg Downes, south unto the woods, eastwardly along the creek being opposite to Captain Adam Thorrogoods plantation in Lynhaven and north upon Chisopeian bay". Two hunderd acres were due by assignment, 50 acres for his own personal adventure, 150 acres for the transportation of three servants, 100 acres for his own personal adventure of himself and wife Naomy Wilkinson, and 400 acres for the transportation of 8 persons. [Patent Book no. 1, pt. 1, pp. 315 405, Richmond.]

On June 21, 1622, "William Wilkinson, Minister of the word of God", received by grant 100 acres in Elizabeth City County, in or near Buckerowe, by assignment of headrights from Henry Herrick and Anne his wife in 1643. It is probably that he later lived on this tract which adjoined a plantation of 700 acres held by Madame Elizabeth Claiborne "wife of William Claiborne, His Majesty's Treasurer of this colony of Virginia".[Patent Book no. 2, p 82.]

After a residence of some 15 years in Virginia during which time he buried his wife Naomi and married the Widow Budden with a daughter Elizabeth, he settled in Maryland. On October 10, 1650, he applied to his Lordship's Land Office at St. Mary's for 900 acres of land, his rights for his own personal adventure and for the transportation of his three daughters Mary, Rebecca, and Elizabeth, hi wife and her daughter, and three servants - William Warren, Robert Cornish, and Anne Stevens.

He died testate in 1663 and bequeathed property to his step-daughter Elizabeth Budden and his grandsons William Dent and William Hatton. The residue of the estate was to be divided equally between his sons-in-law, Thomas Dent and William Hatton. [Wills, Liber 1, folio 190.]

On February 4, 1673, Thomas Dent, Gent., appeared before the Prerogative Court and showed that William Wilkinson, Clerke, executed his will before his death and named him and William Hatton as the executors. He furthermore proved to the satisfaction of the court that they had cared for Elizabeth Budden for several years who recently died intestate, and thus requested letters of administration upon her estate.
