W. S. Shearer earned a reputation as being a man who did things with style and one who managed (or at least tried!) to outdo the neighborhood....Case in point... After his barn burnt, W. S. Shearer had a new one built. According to local custom, a barn dance was in order. While other area farmers usually called on local talent to provide the music for such occasions, W.S Shearer managed to get Guy Lombardo and his Orchestra (of Auld Lang Syne fame) to do the honours...The Barn Dance was such a raging success that the band was booked for the next night too....
