The birthplace seems to be conclusively Northumberland and NOT Galashiels as the 2 census records would seem to show this conclusively. Less clear is where in Northumberland but I'm plumping for Woodburn - not Wordburn which I think is misread by the editor of the census records - as there is an East and West Woodburn but no Wordburn. Maybe the Galashiels location goes back to his father but this is pure surmise. Funnily enough, William's son Robert, though born in Little Ouseburn, Yorkshire in 1841 is found, in 1901 as a shepherd (his father's profession) in Hexham, Northumberland - which is the area in which East and West Woodburn is found. I would regard this as much more than mere coincidence. As far as when he died, I'm not more sure than that it was some time between 1861 and 1871 because Sarah, his wife, is noted in the next census as a widow and "Cowkeeper" living with Margaret the 2nd daughter who never married. I'm sticking his death date in the middle at 1866 but it's pure conjecture.
