Early Land Acquisition in Augusta County, VA

Image:RobertsonWilliamNEvarious.jpg

Wiliam Robertson's land (NE, 473 acres, 1764), acquired from his father-in-law, James Kerr as shown on the map meticulously drawn by J.R. Hildebrand, cartographer. This map is copyrighted©, used by permission of John Hildebrand, son of J.R. Hildebrand, April, 2009. As listed below, Tract "A" from James Kerr was his original tract of 473 acres, shown on the J.R. Hildebrand Map. The reference to the "old line of said Manor" (below) probably indicates that the additional two tracts of land were adjoining to the north, above the original Beverley Patent.

Land Patent Record:

  • Land Patent Book 31: Matthew Robertson & William Robertson, 85 acres, Augusta County on Middle River joining the Patent Line of Beverley Manor; 10 July 1755, pg. 497. 10 Shillings. [Source: Virginia Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 31, No. 2, pg. 160].

Acquisition of Land from Chalkley's

William Robertson acquired land in Augusta County, VA from his father-in-law, James Kerr in the following transaction:

  • Page 608.--17th May, 1764. James Carr (Kerr) to William Robertson, £300, three tracts joining each other on Long Meadow of Middle River of Shanandoe. "A" contains 473 acres in Beverley Manor, old line of said Manor. "B," 350 acres adjoining "A." "C" corner aforesaid tract. Teste: Mathew and Robert Kenney. Delivered: Wm. Robinson, May, 1767.
  • Page 255?.—20th December, 1770. Joseph Reaburn and Margaret to William Robertson, £125, 100 acres on Long Meadow, corner land formerly belonging to William Skillern. and now Isaac White's, William Robertson's line. Teste: Samuel McKee. Hugh Donaghe, James Kerr.
  • Page 164.—20th March, 1772. Robert Beverley to Alexander and William Robertson. Delivered: Alexander Robertson, Esq., 29th March, 1788.

Disposition of Land from Chalkley's:

  • Page 163.—9th January, 1771. William Robertson and Letis to John Stewart, £200, on north side of Middle River of Shanandore, part of two tracts: A, sold to John Moffett by Beverley, 24th May, 1750; B, patented to Mathew and William Robertson, 10th July, 1755, 196 acres; corner Mathew Robertson. Records of William Robertson in Augusta County, VA

From Chalkley's:

  • William Robertson vs. James Anderson (Long Meadow).--Trespass, James killed Robertson's fowls and hogs with ratsbane in 1767. James Meek's deposition, November 1, 1768. He was at James Anderson's house on Long Meadow. James wife was Elizabeth, and they had a daughter Jean. William Robertson's wife was Lettice. Elizabeth was sister of William Skillem and George Skillem(?). Verdict for plaintiff. (Note: "ratsbane" was an early word for "rat poison" or "white arsenic powder").
  • Page .468.—17th May, 1768. Robert Scot to his son Jacob Scot, £50, 175 acres on north side of Shanando, part of 350 acres patented to Robert Scott, 30th July, 1742. Teste: Samuel Henderson, William Robertson. Delivered: Jacob Scott, 15th November, 1771.

  • Page 67.—25th February, 1776. Hugh Allen's estate appraised by Samuel Henderson, William Robertson, James Kerr.

Will of William Robertson

From Chalkley's:

William Robertson appears to have written two wills that appear in Augusta County records:

  • Page 43.-- September, 1802. William Robertson's will (in form of a letter addressed to his son, Mathew)--Mathew is engaged to Miss Satren Kennerley, and father advises him to fulfil the engagement; daughter, Mary; son, James. Proved, 26th August, 1811. (Note: this will appears to have been writted to "urge" his son Matthew, who was then engaged to Catherine Kennerly. The urging must have worked, for on 19 May 1803, Matthew Robertson married Catherine Kennerly in Augusta County. The date "proven" must have been later than 26 August 1811, since William Robertson died in October 1812 according to most sources.).
  • Page 165 - - 29th May, 1809. William Robertson's will - - To son, Mathew; son-in-law, Robt. Givens; to son, James; son-in-law, Thos. Downey; estate to be divided into equal shares, and one share to each, viz: son, James; daughter, Jane, wife to John Givens; daughter, Isabella, wife to George Givens; daughter, Elizabeth, wife to Robt. Douglass; daughter, Lettice, wife to William Rankin; grandson, Edward Downing, son to Thomas; daughter, Rebecca, wife to David White; to Lettice and Ann Robertson, daughters; to son, Alexander; to Dorcas and Phoebe Allison, daughters*. Teste: Wm. Patrick, John Porterfield, Chas. Patrick. Proved, 26th October, 1812. Givens and Robertson qualify. Patrick refuses.
  • - Note: Dorcas and Phoebe Allison named in the will of William Robertson were actually granddaughters of William, the daughters of William's deceased daughter Sarah (1760-1791), who married William Allison (as his first wife).
