William Reid was born some time around the late 1850s. He consistently claimed to have been born in County Armagh, Ireland, but no birth or baptism record for him has yet been found there or anywhere else in Ireland. However, it is clear from his marriage certificate that he was the son of John Reid, and in 1887 when John died, William was the informant for his father's death. Also, William's son Michael appears in the 1911 census living with a Rosanna Farrell formerly Reid, whose marriage record tells us she was the daughter of John Reid and Julia Hanlon. John Reid and Julia Hanlon are known to have moved around Ireland extensively during the 1840s and 1850s, having their other six children baptised in six different counties, most of which can be linked to locations where the railways were being built, which fits the family tradition that the family worked on building the Irish railways. By the mid-1860s William's parents are known to have settled at 6 Lower Kevin Street in Dublin, where they lived until at least the mid-1870s, so presumably William lived there with them. They later moved to Monasterevin in County Kildare some time in the late 1870s or early 1880s, apparently bringing their sons William and John with them.

William was married at Monasterevin on 23rd April 1884 to Elizabeth Mary Bowe, who was 26 and from Monasterevin. They stayed in Monasterevin and had nine children, although two died as infants and two more died as teenagers. William, Elizabeth and their children appear in both the 1901 and 1911 censuses living at Mary's Lane in Monasterevin, with William working as a bricklayer.

William died at Monasterevin on 6th February 1924 of cancer of the liver, which he had had for six months. Elizabeth survived him by thirteen years.
