Stephen Reid was baptised on 2nd October 1853 at Rathmines in County Dublin, a southern suburb of the city of Dublin. His parents were a mason and bricklayer named John Reid and his wife Julia Hanlon. Little is known about Stephen's childhood. His parents had moved about extensively in the decade or so prior to his birth, apparently following major railway-building projects, but after Stephen's baptism the family's next traced appearance is not until 1866, by which time he was 13. Between at least 1866 and 1875 the family lived at 8 Lower Kevin Street in Dublin.

In 1883, aged 29, Stephen emigrated. He sailed on the SS Belgravia, which picked up passengers at Liverpool, Cobh and Queenstown, but it is not recorded at which port he boarded. The Belgravia arried at New York on 12th June 1883. Stephen's sister Maria also emigrated to New York - Maria's husband Robert Kelly had emigrated in 1882 and Maria followed in August 1883, just a couple of months after her brother Stephen.

In America, Stephen settled initially in Manhattan in New York City. It was there that he married in 1885, aged 31, to Mary Shields. In 1888 trade directories show that Stephen was living at 646 Third Avenue and working as a bricklayer.

Stephen and Mary (who appears to have been also known as Marnie) had seven children, but four died young. By 1900 the family had moved to the Bronx, where they lived on East 161st Street. The family stayed on East 161st Street between at least 1900 and 1930, albeit living at three different addresses on the street.

In 1920, Stephen returned to Ireland for the first time since emigrating 37 years earlier. He stayed for over a year, returning to New York in 1921. On his return to America he said that his nearest relative in Ireland was his brother John Reid of Coole, Monasterevin, County Kildare, and that his nearest relative in America was his son Major J.S. Reid of the Bronx.

Stephen died in 1935, aged 81.
