His name at the time of his birth was "Isac Wilhelm Petersson". His birth record is listed in the Hornaryd parish record, 1886-1895 on page 265. The 1890 census list his name as " Isak Vilhelm". The first name "William" is an Anglicized version, and does not exist in the Swedish language.

Previously, he might have had the patrontymic surname "Carlsson", but the practice was dropped and the patronymic stabilized into a surname. The passenger manifest of the White Star Line ship Majestic arriving in New York on September 26, 1894 lists his family's name as "Peterson". The surname was changed to Newquist shortly after arriving in the United States.

Willie may have travelled with his father, Carl, to the U. In 1952, he wrote a letter that contained the following: " Hundreds of years ago the Newquist came from the Province of Smaland---from the small city or village of Vaxjo. Vaxjo was the capitol of Sweden long before Stockholm. The family migrated to Byxholm and thence to Honaryd." He was referring to his mother's side of the family.

(Note: Boxholm, Sweden is a part of the Vaxjo Kommun and located just a few miles south of Hornaryd.)
