The passenger manifest of the White Star Line ship Majestic arriving in New York on September 26, 1894 lists her name as "Gert. Peterson". The surname was changed to Newquist shortly after arriving in the United States.

"When we moved to DeKalb, mother started talking about relatives in Malta, especially Aunt Gertie who lived with Irene and Ladore Tanner. She lived with them until she passed away. The Tanners had a son, Barrie, who still lives in Malta at 306 N6th St, zip 60150.

I note this since we had consistently ran into theTanners at Art & Hilda Newquist affairs and again at Nick and Jane Newquist whose daughter's wedding we attended and again the Tanners. That's the best I can come up with, I know Ladore worked for Dad in the foundry for awhile, but the work was too tough for him."
