Revolutionary War Pension Information

Information from “Virginia/West Virginia Genealogical Data from Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Records”, Vol. 3, compiled by Patrick G. Wardell, Lt. Col. U.S. Army Ret. :

Kennedy, William - entered service 1776 in Virginia regiment; granted Pension age 60 in Brunswick County, Virginia, 1818; resided there in 1820 at age 70; died 11/30/1824 in Augusta County, Virginia; son George S. resided there in 1858; query letter in file states soldier was born in Virginia, married Miss McClure & resided near Staunton, Virginia. F-S38117, R1472.

- other records indicate that William Kennedy married Martha Scott, daughter of Robert Scott.

Culpeper Co Court, 18 May, 1840. By the affidavit of George Scott Kennady and on motion of Abigail Shields, Martha and Betty Kennady it was ordered to be certified that William Kennady was an officer in the Rev. War. (The deposition is the same as Goodall's) and that he died in the county of Augusta about the year 1817, intestate, leaving several children who were his only heirs at law: namely, Robert, James, David, George, Polly, Abigail, Martha, Betsey and Margaret Kennady. That Robert, James and David moved to the West: Robert has since died leaving children; Polly Kennady married William Black, Jr. and resides in Kentucky; Abigail married a Mr. Shields of Augusta Co,. VA and is now a widow. Margaret married William Black, Sr., and died intestate and without children, about 1823.

George S. Kennady made an affidavit which agrees with both of the foregoing. He stated that Abigail (Kennedy) Black went to live in Bourbon Co., Ken.; That Abigail (Kennedy) Shields, a widow in this neighborhood (evidently Augusta Co.) where the family has always resided with the exception of those who went west..
A copy of the affidavit of George Kennady was filed in court and is the same on which is found the certificate of the said court certifying the heirs of William Kennady.

The heirs appointed Archibald M. Green as their Atty. 8 May 1840. Acknowledged before Isaac Hall, J. of P. Augusta Co., VA..
Warrant 8798 for 1333-1/2 acres issued to George, Martha Kennedy and Abigail Shields, 22 May, 1840.
- William Kennedy actually died in 1824 according to his Revolutionary War Pension File and his wife Martha died in 1817.

    Commonwealth of Virginia Brunswick County to wit
    On this twenty seventh day of April in the year 1818 before the County Court of Brunswick County State of Virginia personally appears before us William Kennedy aged sixty years resident in the said County of Brunswick and State aforesaid who being first duly sworn in open Court according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the provision made by the late act of Congress entitled an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the Land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary War that the said William Kennedy enlisted in the latter end of the year 1776 under Captain James Mason, whose company constituted a part of the 15th Virginia Regiment on the Continental establishment, and served under the said Captain in the said Regiment until the said 15th Regiment was transferred to the 11th Virginia Regiment on the same Continental establishment where he continued until the latter end of 1779 when he was regularly discharged on account of his tour of service having expired at or near moristown [Morristown] in the State of New Jersey but has lost his discharge and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his Country for support and that his own declaration and the declaration also of John Hall on oath is all the evidence now in his power of his said services having lost his discharge by some means: sworn to and declared before us the day and year aforesaid.

    Brunswick County to wit on the twenty seventh day of April 1818 personally appeared before us Justices of the peace for the said County of Brunswick and state aforesaid John Hall of the said County & State aforesaid and made oath that the said William Kennedy did enlist in the latter end of the year 1776 under Captain James Mason whose company constituted a part of the 15th Virginia Regiment on the Continental establishment and served under the said Captain in the said Regiment until it was transferred to the 11th Virginia Regiment on the same Continental establishment where he continued until the latter end of the year 1779 when he was regularly discharged on account of his tour of service having expired at or near Morristown in the State of New Jersey but has lost his discharge and that he is in reduced circumstances and stands in need of the assistance of his country for support.

    On this 24th day of July 1820 personally appeared in open Court being a Court of record for the said County of Brunswick legally established as such by the Constitution of the State of Virginia, William Kennedy aged seventy years and sixty-six years a resident in the said County of Brunswick, who being first duly sworn, according to law, doth on his oath, declare that he served in the revolutionary War as follows, in Captain James Mason's Company in the 15th Virginia Regiment commanded by Colonel David Mason for the term of 2 ½ years and was then under Captain White and consolidated with the 11th Regiment commanded by Colonel Innis [James Innis] about six months and that he has received from the Government of the United States $120 under a pension Warrant issued from the war Department bearing No. 2064. And I do solemnly swear that I was a resident Citizen of the United States on the 18th day of March 1818 and that I have not since that time by gift, sale or in any manner whatever disposed of my property or any part thereof with intent thereby so to diminish it as to bring myself within the provision of an act of Congress entitled “an act to provide for certain persons engaged in the land and naval service of the United States in the revolutionary war” passed on the 18th day of March 1818, and that I have not nor has any person in trust for me any property, or securities, contracts or debts due to me nor have I any income other than what is contained in the schedule hereto annexed and by me subscribed viz.: one old Saddle & Bridle & two chests

    And that I have only myself and family and was brought up a former and from my advanced age and am unable to support myself thereby. Sworn to and declared on the 24th day of July 1820 before the County Court of Brunswick aforesaid.
