Was a farmer in Colchester. 1851-1861 census shows he residing with his family in a one story log house. Brought 50 acres of lot 13, in the 3rd concession, Colchester South, from his father, John on March 10, 1860 for 70.00. Property sold 1872. Later moved to Detroit with daughters, Annie, Liva and Nettie in 1876 and became naturalized citizen of the U.S. Spent the last 35 years with the daughters. Final address was 1401 12 St. in Detroit.-home of daughter Annie Shay. Per Lee Griffin-----below. Migrated from Colchester, Canada to Detroit in 1876 William and family were listed in the 1881 census in Canada and there is evidence that he was still there in 1883.

The error appears to be in the 1900 census for the family in Detroit. The census indicates that William had been living in the United States fro 14 years and it says that he immigrated in 1876. That is a simple math error . He likely had been living in the United States for 14 years and , thus , immigrated in 1836 instead of 1876. The Helferich family history lists the children of William Helferich as Annie, Alice, Emma. Liva, Nettie, Ella and George. The speech made for the Helferich Family Reunion includes two others-William and Etta. It states that the 3 younger children died of diphtheria in 1877, in 1 week. Young George was the 3rd to die during the span of about a week. Know of his death date from the picture of his gravestone. The 2 girls who did were Ella and Etta.
