Jean's tombstone reads "In memory of Jane wife of Wm. Helferich, died May 12 1888 aged 52 yrs, 4 ms, 17 days". This calculates out to a birth of Dec 25, 1835. The birthday book of her granddaughter, Jean Clara Bates, indicates that she was born Dec 25 1836. The 1881 census in Colchester gives Jane's age at 44. All other ages in that census seem to be accurate. This age of 44 supports the birth date of Dec 25 1835. Migrated from Scotland to Canada as a child when her father's regiment was sent there. The 1881 census indicates that Jean was born in Scotland. discrepancies---Jean Lockerbie's tombstone and the 1881 census gives her name as "Jane". All family records give her name as "Jean".
