William Green was baptised on 6th March 1825 at Pagham in Sussex, son of Charlotte Green, formerly Edwards, and her husband Charles Green, an agricultural labourer. William was the eldest of their eleven children. Most of William's younger siblings' baptisms record that the family lived in the hamlet of Lagness. The 1841 census finds William working as a servant for a yeoman named George Adames and his family at Lagness, living next door to William's parents and siblings. By 1851 William was still at Lagness, living back with his parents and working as an agricultural labourer.

William has not been found in the 1861 census. His next sighting is not until 14th June 1865, when he was married to Helen Hadkinson. They married at Manchester Cathedral, over 200 miles north of Pagham. She was ten years his junior; when they married he was 40 and she was 30. They do not appear to have had any children.

The 1871 census finds William and Helen living at Whittaker Lane in Prestwich. William was working as a gardener. They also had an under gardener living with them. By 1881 they had moved to 47 Scholes Street in Salford, and William's nephew Charles was living with them.

Helen died in 1890, aged 55. She and William had been married for 25 years. She died in the Prestwich district, which covered the Crumpsall area of Manchester. The following year's census finds William living alone in one room at 2 Jones Square, Tyson Street in the Crumpsall area of Manchester. William survived Helen by less than three years, dying in 1893, aged 68.
