Helen (or Ellen) Hadkinson was baptised on 8th February 1835 at Didsbury in Lancashire, daughter of John and Lucy Hadkinson. Didsbury at that time was part of the parish of Manchester, but was a village to the south of the growing town. Helen appears in the 1841 census living with her father and two brothers in Didsbury.

By 1851 Helen was working as a housemaid for a widow named Jane Birley and her four adult daughters at Ford Bank in Didsbury. Helen was one of seven servants there. The 1861 census also finds Helen in Didsbury, but on this occasion visiting a lodging house keeper named Elizabeth Cush and her nephew Thomas Barber at Chapel Street South.

On 14th June 1865, aged 30, Helen was married at Manchester Cathedral to a gardener named William Green. He was ten year her senior and originally from Lagness in the parish of Pagham on the Sussex coast near Chichester, some 200 miles from Manchester. Helen and William do not appear to have had any children. The 1871 census finds them living at Whittaker Lane in Prestwich. By 1881 they had moved to 47 Scholes Street in Salford, and William's nephew Charles was living with them.

Helen died in 1890, aged 55. She and William had been married for 25 years. She died in the Prestwich district, which covered the Crumpsall area of Manchester where William appears living alone in the 1891 census. William survived her by less than three years, dying in 1893.

ch. 8 Feb 1835, St James, Didsbury, Lancashire: Ellen daughter of John & Lucy Hadkinson

Needs to be confirmed at Greater Manchester County Record Office. This baptism has been linked to the Ellen or Helen Hadkinson who married William Green in 1865 on the basis that in the censuses after their marriage she consistently claimed to have been born around 1835 in Didsbury and their marriage certificate names her father as John Hadkinson.
