William Bradshaw's origins have yet to be established. Judging by the age quoted for him when he died, he was born in about 1801. His first confirmed sighting however is not until 23rd October 1825, when he married a Jane Watson at Monkwearmouth in County Durham. She was from the village of South Hylton, on the opposite side of the River Wear, and the couple moved to South Hylton after their marriage.

William and Jane had two daughters baptised at South Hylton: Elizabeth in 1826 and Ann in 1827. Both their baptisms describe William as a potter. William died as a young man when he was only 29 years old, being buried at South Hylton on 4th October 1830. Jane was therefore left with the two small girls to look after. She would remarry five years later.
