Facts and Events
William Henry Bentley was born the second of five children on the 13th April 1872 in Newtown, NSW to William Henry Bentley, from England, and Mary Ann Collins who was born in Sydney, NSW. After the death of his mother, Williams father remarried to the widowed Ellen Drum (McHugh), this makes family history research interesting with two couples from the one family consisting of William Henry Bentley and their wives, Ellen Bentley. From his fathers second marriage he had a half sister who died as an infant and four younger step brothers. When William was aged 19 he was married at St David’s church in Surry Hills, NSW on 23rd November 1891 to 18 year old, Ellen Winifred (Nellie) Malone. Although they were aged 18 and 19, both William and Nellie have their ages listed as 21 on their marriage certificate. At this point in history, according to the rites of the Church of England both parties had to either be 21 or have permission from their parents to marry prior to being 21 years of age. William and Nellie had seven children in the twelve years together prior to Nellie’s death from blood loss, on 12th November 1904, four days after the birth of their youngest daughter. William had obviously known Mabel Harivel for at least 18 months, if not longer prior to their marriage in Balmain during 1909, 5 years after Nellie's death. Mabel had a daughter called Amy who was born in 1907. Her birth certificate initially records her name as Amy Mabel Celeste Harivel and no father however in 1909 her birth certificate is altered to add her fathers name as William Henry Bentley. William and Mabel had another five children, the first being in 1908 prior to their marriage. William worked as a tailor or what was otherwise called a clothing machiner at Murdocs in Castlereagh St, Sydney. William died on the 31st of March 1958. References
