Mary Ann Collins was born in Sydney, NSW during 1846. Mary was working as a dress maker when she married William Henry Bentley on the 27th January 1870. Mary and William had five children prior to Mary passing away from influenza and heart failure in August 1894.

The available records leave clues but as yet I am still trying to find further information.

  • Birth records were not required in New South Wales until 1856 so not being able to find a birth record for Mary Ann is expected because she was born about ten years prior to this requirement.
  • Marriage Record: NSW BDM 1870/000097 Date place of Marriage, 27th January 1870 Sydney, William Bentley - Bachelor, Mary Ann Collins - Spinster. Address 41 (or 47) Barden Street Sydney. William is listed as a Cook, usual place of residence 77 Clarence Street and Mary Ann is a Dressmaker, usual place of residence 169 Gipps Street. The witnesses are William (G??oor) and Patricia Thornton. Neither of their parents are listed.
    • Barden Street, Sydney is actually in the suburb of Tempe close to the Cooks River which was a part of the original Grove subdivision which was the residence of Edward and Ann Ballard. (Maternal grandparents of Arthur John Locke).
  • Death Record: NSW BDM 11790/1894 Date and Place 17 Aug 1894, Redfern Street Darlington NSW, Age 48 (therefore birth year is about 1846) Father: Joseph Collins, Fathers Occupation Farrier, Mother: Margaret Nevin. Place and Age at time of marriage: Sydney, 24, Spouse: William Bentley, Children of Marriage: Theresa 23, William H 21, Laurinza 19, Marcella 17, Living, 1 female deceased. Informant: Husband, Cause of Death: 1 Influenza 8 weeks, 2 Cardiac Failure 8 days Dr Martin, last seen 16 Aug 1894. Burial 19 Aug 1894 Church of England Cemetery Rookwood. Registered 17 Aug 1894 Redfern.
  • Newspaper Funeral Notices in the Sydney Morning Herald on Saturday 18th August 1894 : Ignoring husband and children notices, the additional notices are;
    • The friends of Mr Collins are invited to attend the Funeral of his deceased beloved sister. (Without a first name this then required other matching records to find any information and the only other Collins in the NSW Birth, Deaths and Marriage records with parents Joseph and Margaret was a death certificate for Joseph Collins in 1922 in Newtown, New South Wales).
    • The friends of Mr Arthur John Locke are respectively invited to attend the funeral of his deceased beloved cousin. With Arthur John Locke being a cousin it becomes highly likely that at least one of Mary Ann's parents were born in New South Wales, however it gets tricky to sort out the relationship as Arthur John Locke married Delia Collins so it is possible Delia is the relation to Mary Ann. Then to make it even more complicated, it appears most likely that the correct Arthur John Locke is the brother of Daniel Richard Locke who married Mary Ann's eldest daughter Theresa.
