William Henry Bentley was born during 1838 in Oldham, Lancashire, England to Robert Bentley (1782-1844) and Ann Jackson (1791-1849). He emigrated to Australia and worked as a Cook and then as a council labourer.

William and Mary Ann were married on the 27th January 1870 at 47 Burton St, Sydney, NSW. They had five children.

After the death of their spouses. On the 6th November 1896 in Sydney, NSW, Australia. the then 58 year old William Bentley whose youngest child was then fourteen, married 40 year old Ellen McHugh a widow whose youngest child was only two years old. William and Ellen had one child.

William passed away on the 29th August 1919 at 3 Bay Street, Rockdale, NSW from a fatty degeneration of the heart. He was buried at the Church of England section in Rockwood Cemetery.
