Ellen Winifred Malone was born fourth of nine children on the 28th August 1873 at Little Campbell St, Surry Hills NSW, to Irish immigrants, Philip Malone and Mary McCarty. Ellen was known as Nellie to the degree that official documents including wedding certificate and birth certificates of her children list her name alternately between Ellen and Nellie.

William and Nellie had seven children in the twelve years together prior to Nellie’s death from blood loss, on 12th November 1904, four days after the birth of their youngest daughter.
