Emigrated 1882 says an Akron Beacon J article from about 1933 in his honor celebrating his 80th birthday reports that he was "Born near Berlin in1852". Rather annoyingly, the 1900 US census gives his birthdate as "Dec 1853". Arrgh. To make it worse, the 1900 census says that he emigrated1885.

1920 census: date of immigration, 1883; birth year abt 1853

Family remembers his siblings Ferdinand and Minnie.

Death cert. says that father's name is John.

Brother Ferdinand (recalled in family records too), b. Oct 1860, emigrated 1882 Marriage: 28 July 1892

Seems likely that August Ruthenberg also of Akron is another brother; parents have same first names, all live in Akron. Immigration year close (1910census says 1883).

I note too that Wilhelm was witness for the death of Friedrich Ruthenberg (d Akron 29 Nov 1924, b 24 Jan 1851), who has father John and mother Marie,. Hard to resist the conclusion that this is his brother, but I have no other evidence. In connection with this Friedrich, he is distinctly stated to be from Wallmow, Brandenburg. Now this is interesting as there is a Ruthenberg clan from Wallmow tracked to the mid 1700s.This also suggests a link to the Australian Ruthenbergs.
