"On Section 2, of the town of Ellicott, stood a building erected for a tavern and used as such for one year. In 1855 Townsend Jackson bought the farm and tavern, and there resided until his death, when it became the property of his surviving children, Edward M. Jackson, of Youngsville, Pa., Louise A. (Jackson) Garfield, and Olive B. Jackson. The farm has been shorn of many of its acres, as the demand for lots and small tracts became insistent, until now the homestead is surrounded by but twenty of its original acres.

"Townsend Jackson, son of Obadiah Jackson, of English descent, and his wife, Sarah (Boreman) Jackson, of Holland descent, was born in the village of Rosyln, Long Island, N. Y., Aug 16, 1824, died at his home in the town of Ellicott, Chautauqua county, N. Y., Nov. 24, 1901. He spent his early life in his native section of the State, then came to Chautauqua county, locating in the town of Ellicott, where he bought the farm previously referred to and now the present home of his daughters, Louise A. (Jackson) Garfield, and Olive B. Jackson. In addition to his farming operations, he dealt in fine horses, not more for a desire for profit than for a genuine love for a good horse. He owned several during his lifetime, to which he became greatly attached, and the sale of them was often postponed. He was a man of strong and upright character, devoted to his family, and universally liked. He was successful in his undertakings, and an excellent business man. In politics he was a Republican; in religion a Quaker or Friend.

"Townsend Jackson married, in Greenvail (sic: Greenvale), Long Island, March 14, 1843, Margaret A. Nostrand, born Nov. 2, 1825, in Jericho, L. I., died March 25, 1903, at the farm in Ellicott, Chautauqua county, daughter of Epenetus and Eliza (Bert) Nostrand, of Holland descent. Mr. and Mrs. Jackson were the parents of six children as follows: Sanford, deceased; Jones, deceased; Louise A., married Albert P. Garfield, of Busti; Epenetus N., deceased; Edward M., of Youngsville, Pa., and Olive B."
--End of quote from article in "History of Chautauqua County, New York and Its People"

From "The Jamestown Journal" 2 Sep 1859 found at www.genealogybank.com: "At the Second Annuel Fair of the Busti Union Agricultural Society held at Busti, Sept 7th and 8th 1859: The privilege of competing for Premiums is extended to Warren County, Pa., and Chautauqua County, NY. Among the Judges of Class Second Horses was Townsend Jackson."

The Townsend in the above quotes is very likely the father of Jones Jackson. And the article verifies that this Townsend was the son of Obadiah. Obadiah left a large estate which would enable Townsend's interest in horse breeding/racing. Wallace's American Trotting Register, Vol. 7 by National Assoc. of Trotting Horse Breeders, pg 95: #6773 PHOENIX (6) . . . "Bred by Thomas Jackson and Jacob Seib, Brooklyn, NY; passed to Townsend Jackson; then to Jones Jackson, Jamestown, NY; then to Henry Sylvester, Sinclairsville, NY; then to E. A. Chipman, Watts Flatts, NY.

The following source gives a birth date of 16 Aug 1823; the biography in the Chautauqua county history publication gives an ALT birth date of 16 Aug 16, 1824. His gravestone has 1823.

"Thus, we have the years of his birth and death. Note that these dates nearly agree with those that are listed in the book 'A Documentary History of the Dutch Congregation of Oyster Bay, Queens County, Island of Nassau (Now Long Island), Volumes 1 - 5', by Henry A. Stoutenburgh that was cited earlier in this report, i.e. “b. Aug. 16, 1823; d. Jan. -, 1902”. Since the author of the book, Mr. Stoutenburgh, stated in his tome that “The two oldest boys used to live with their gd. [grand-] father Nostrand in C. S. [“Cedar Swamp”, part of today’s Glen Head, Long Island, N.Y.], and attended school there with the compiler”, it is likely that he was still in contact, either directly or indirectly, with them and thus obtained information on Townsend and Margaret Jackson that was almost up-to-date. The date of death given in the book is probably when he learned of Townsend Jackson’s passing, which actually occurred the previous year."
