Dr. Troha found several references to an “Epenetus N. Jackson”, who lived in Chautauqua County, New York. The first is a newspaper item indicating that had completed his mortgage payments:

The Buffalo Express, Thursday Morning, April 24, 1902, Page 5, Column 2: “ITEMS OF LEGAL RECORD ... DISCHARGES OF MORTGAGES. ... Epenetus N. Jackson to George D. Melhuish [surname practically illegible; may be misspelt] —December, 1901”

Next, he apparently bought property through a sheriff sale, for we find:

The Buffalo Express, Wednesday Morning, September 3, 1902, Page 5, Column 5:

“CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY. OFFICIAL DOCUMENTS RECORDED YESTERDAY IN MAYVILLE. [Note: Mayville is the county seat of Chautauqua County, New York] DEEDS, ... George W. Boomer [surname nearly illegible; may actually be “Roomer”] et al. (by sheriff) to Epenetus N. Jackson, Ellicott…. [$]25.00 [value difficult to read; may be $ 25.90]”

Then, Epenetus N. Jackson was apparently assigned part of the ownership of a patent for a “combination-washbench” in 1905, but there is no reason given for this action on the part of the inventor:

“UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ———— ABIJAH T. WILCOX, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO EDWARD F. FENTON, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK, AND EPENETUS N. JACKSON.

COMBINATION-WASHBENCH. ——— No. 805,331. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nov. 21, 1905. Application filed November 25, 1904. Serial No. 234,132.”

The final reference to Epenetus Jackson is in a line amidst an itemized list of expenses in the proceedings of the Board of Supervisors of Chautauqua County, New York in 1910:

“Journal of Proceedings – Chautauqua County, New York, Board of Supervisors”, Printed in Mayville, N.Y. (1910). Page 172 [the page contains a balance sheet of the various expenses incurred: Credit by cash paid for care of Epenetus Jackson …. 230.00

1900 United States Federal Census Name: Epenetus Jackson, Age: 44 Father: Townsend Jackson Residence: Chautauqua, New York Perhaps he was in ill health and passed away before the next census was taken; that would explain the 1910 Board of Supervisors journal entry cited above. After this discovery, I found Epenetus Jackson’s final resting place on FindAGrave.com. He was buried in the Chautauqua County Poor House Cemetery, which makes sense, since he was being supported by the county in 1910 [no photograph of his gravestone accompanied the listing].
