"The principal family in the 16th Century were the Foules, who represented the township as Judicators or Doomsmen at the Slaidburn Court Baron. Thomas Foule dying in 1535 left three daughters, the youngest of whom (Ellen) married Edward Waddington of Halifax (see 1516 of Grindleton and of Hipperholme, Halifax). Their son Thomas Waddington 1540 of Grindleton and of Southowram, Halifax, added much to the estate which passed 100 years later tby marriage to the Holdens of Chaigley (see Isabella Waddington 1616 of Grindleton) and from they to the family of Brockholes. The ancient deeds (going back to the 1300 century) are now (1926) in the possession of Major FitzHerbert Brockholes of Claughton. Froma younger branch of this Waddyngton family, Roger Waddington 1569 of Southowram, nr. Halifax, second son of Thomas Waddington 1540 of Grindleton, descends the present owner (John Waddington 1879) of Waddington Hall."
