8. THOMAS3 PATTERSON (WILLIAM2, JAMES1) was born 01 October 1764 in Lancaster Co, PA, and died 17 November 1841 in Cross Creek Twnship, Washington Co, PA. He married ELIZABETH FINDLEY 06 October 1795 in Washington Co, PA, daughter of WILLIAM FINDLEY and MARY COCHRAN. She was born Abt. 1773 in Westmoreland Co, PA, and died 08 January 1837 in Cross Creek Twnship, Washington Co, PA.

Notes for THOMAS PATTERSON:

Thomas moved with his father and brother to Washington County, PA in 1779 when he was 14 years old. He was nicknamed "The General".

From "The Patterson & Pattison Family Association, Book 1", 1963, Local History microfiche G-1641 v.1: The General lived at Patterson's Mills, Cross Creek Township. He was a member of Congress (1817-1825) during the contest which resulted in the election of John Q. Adams to the Presidency (by the House of Representatives). He steadily and invariably voted for Jackson, while his brother John voted for Adams. During the last war with Great Britain (War of 1812), he organized and led a force for the relief of Gen. Hull at Detroit. When the force had reached N.W. Ohio, the news of Hull's surrender induced the General to return. In his youth he was engaged in many pursuits of, and skirmishes with the Indians. Being a man of great piety and largely endowed with the nobler qualities of our race, he shrank on all occasions from an acknowledgement that he had been instrumental in taking a human life, although it was known that his rifle seldom varied from its mark and that he frequently unloaded it in various skirmishes in which he engaged. He died suddenly of apoplexy.
