Thomas Haines’ origins have yet to be established. If the age quoted at his burial is correct then he was born in about 1775. His first confirmed sighting is on 6th June 1815, when he was married at Buckland in Gloucestershire to Elizabeth King. At the time of his marriage he was living at Childswickham. Between 1815 and 1825 Thomas and Elizabeth had four children baptised at Buckland, all of whom appear to have been born in the hamlet of Laverton, which lies in Buckland parish. Thomas worked as a shopkeeper and butcher.

Elizabeth died in 1825, aged 44, and was buried at Stanway, a few miles south of Laverton. She died either giving birth to their fourth child or shortly afterwards; she was buried in the August and the baby was not baptised until the following month.

Thomas married again in 1827, with his second wife being Sarah Jones from Broadway, just north of Laverton. They had a son named Thomas Meadows Haines baptised at Buckland on Christmas Day 1830. Sarah has yet to be traced after 1830.

Thomas died in 1838, and was buried at Stanway on 30th March 1838, although his last abode was given as Laverton. He was said to be 62 years old. The 1841 census finds his eldest son John looking after some of Thomas’s younger children.
